@Daedalus

In my experience TurboPrint's Graphic Publisher was the best tool for cropping until Windows 10 and the corresponding MS Office was released and a sillimar 'drag the borders to crop' tool was added something like 20 years later! You say MS Paint was good and I'll take your word for it. For cropping on Mac I use Photoshop or GIMP, probably overkill but that's what I have.

I remember MS Paint for this picture;

Waterfall (M. C. Escher); it must have been included with a Windows 95 version of Paint or something! I remember doodling on it during lunchtimes at school. Did the water animate or did I imagine that?

@BigD

There are a ton of free and very good graphics editors for Windows.
Just this week after working a idea in Deluxe Paint I went to the pc to continue.

Grafx2 is a simple one that was ported from Amiga to multiple platforms. Krita, Smooth Draw, and well, you can go on and on with the choices.

GIMP is fine, but it is also somewhat large and complicated. Sometimes you want something simple done with a simple program. That's when programs like Paint, Notepad and Calculator shine.

@BigD

I don't get the thread sorry. Why are they reporting a currently available piece of software is being retired on the largest desktop os on the planet vs why aren't they talking about Dpaint that died years ago on a platform that to intents and purposes died soon after. No scandal here unless you have just woke up and think its 1990 or something?

@BigD

it was my favorite tool "so easy" but now I found paint.net which is pretty easy to use (a bit like ImageFX) and powerful.

@A1200

I am interested as to WHY it's a big deal to Windoze users that it's being retired. I personally have no love for it and don't see what use it could have. I have learnt that it is useful for cropping screen grabs and in some extreme examples an artistic tool for some graphical artists on the PC that can't get to grips with Photoshop.

I've also learnt that Grafx2 is available for Mac, PC and other platforms as a tribute to DPaint! And I've downloaded it and it's fun!

I honestly didn't understand the remorse the mainstream PeeCee community felt at its retirement and now I do (a little bit). It seems like a waste of emotion when DPaint is the art package that DESERVES our mourning but I guess you don't miss what you never knew

I'd say this thread has been worth the while. You are entitled to disagree.

It is newsworthy from the perspective of nostalgia for the most part. Dpaint too commands a nostalgic following but as we know all too well the Amiga platform became consigned to history way before Windows had seen it's most popular years.

@A1200

I remember early on really liking Neopaint for windows, very much an Amiga feel.
Still being sold.

@BigD

Grafx2 is avalable on Android too. I have it on the tablet I am writing on ATM.

If you want good paint programs on Windozer let's use Paint Tool SAI and Project Dogwaffle PDPro. The latter is based on DPaint and it is stunning use the same keyboard shortcuts than our beloved DPaint.

Last year version 8.5 of Project Dogwaffle was given out in free download. Check if still available.
