From the size of this iso, I'd assume it has to be installed via USB.
Does anyone have experience installing this, or other linux distros, on an X5000?

@iggy

There's a very useful couple of threads on the Hyperion site on installing Linux on the X5000, and some very helpful people.

I even managed to do it! (But yesterday I accidentally killed my Linux partition).

Thanks Davey,
It can't be any harder than installing Linux on a G5, but the size of that iso threw me.
8.8 GBs is to large for a dual layer DVD, and I've never played around with bootable blu ray discs.

So I just figured this was going to have to be done via USB, and I've never done that before.
I'll check out that site.

Yes, when I did it, if was from a USB.

You have to be careful which brand you use - it seems uBoot is very picky about what drives it likes.

I recommend SanDisk Cruzer.

Also, if your first partition is already an Amiga boot partition, your USB drive will also continue to be the repository of yout Kernel image, and be what you boot your Luinux HDD partition from.

I hope that last bit makes sense, I am (was?) a total noob with Linux.

I'm probably going to add a 2.5" removable drive bay so that I can easily swap SSD boot drives.
That way I won't have to worry about complicated multi-boot considerations.

What I'm going to have to research is a disk format that can be read by MorphOS, OS4, and Linux for the standard high capacity hard drive I want to install inside the system for mass storage.

I've installed Linux on my x5000 off a usb key by putting the image on to a small 4gb usb key then partitioning on to a larger 64gb usb key.

It works but sadly for those with a high end graphics card like a Radeon 7750 or any other southern islands card forget having any decent video playback on it as the 3D acceleration is not yet supported on these cards but is supported on the 4000 5000 and 6000 series cards

Installing a 2nd video card on the motherboard apparently isn't an option if you want to use Amiga OS 4.1 too,.

Still it's not as if the video playback on 4.1 on the X5000 is shabby now is it.... Emotion in particular does a very good job of streams from smplayer

Using Linux also makes you realise just how simple things are on AmigaOS

Yeah, the video card issues do complicate the situation, but since the next upgrade to MorphOS' video drivers doesn't include support for the GCN cards, I've decided to go with a 6870 anyway (which leaves the 7770 I have unused - anyone want to buy a video card ? ).

BTW - Why did you have to do that format in two stages?

@iggy

I did the format in two stages from one usb key to a blank usb key because I couldn't work out how to burn the iso image on to the 64gb first then have the rest of the space partitioned for installing programs.

Am a bit green when it comes to Linux you see and unlike Amiga where you can work out where stuff has been installed to, it's not so obvious in Linux.... 😉

An if MorphOS is not going to support the 7000 series of Radeon cards can someone explain why they are bothering to port this to the X5000 😡

Because, we who already use MorphOS, want it.
Its not necessarily for YOU.

If you have a problem with the way our developers approach video card support, its YOUR problem, not mine.

Everything that has been so far is evolutionary, and we don't skip development of older cards (which is one of the reasons we have accelerated drivers for the Radeon 9800 and the OS4 community doesn't).

Further, IF you'd actually read my posts, I said the GCN cards would not be supported in the next release.
At least one developer has a few, but the lack of good driver examples in Linux does tend to hamper development.
So the priority has been placed on Terascale 2 and earlier cards, which suits me fine if those are the only cards with accelerated support under Linux.

So, is that explanation enough for you, or do you want to make some more dicky comments?

Because I've already supplied a few 7000 series cards to the developer doing the current drivers, as well as an R7 260X (a card not supported by OS4 yet).
And I'm sure the GCN 1,2, and 3 cards will be supported eventually, just not immediately.

@iggy

wow certainly didnt expect that type of tone and outburst, i think its a little over the top and uncalled for if I am being brutally honest.

My comment certainly wasn't meant to be dicky, but lets consider the following:

Most X5000 complete systems are being delivered with either a Radeon R7 250 card (from Amiga Kit) or a Radeon HD 7750 (from Amiga on the Lake and a few others) so it will be likely that a large propotion of those who have recently purchased an X5000 will be running one of these cards.

If by your comments, MorphOS is not going to support these cards then (or certainly for the time being), it is losing out on a potential new user base (myself having been one of them) and i would imagine revenue stream from the issuing of new licences, money that of course would help pay the bills and encourage more development.

I really wanted to try out MorphOS back on my AmigaOne500 machine but sadly because i owned the Sam460cr version motherboard and the OS only supported an onboard audio chip which was missing on the cr model, i missed out here.

It also looks like myself and quite a few new potential users of the X5000 may miss out too thanks to this news as i can't imagine there would be many of us prepared to keep swapping graphics cards around on our motherboards each time we want to run a different OS on the board.

Its a shame really, because I'd rather be highlighting positive things to write about, positivity has the power to influence others and bring new users on board, something both OS's could do with.

@outrun1978

Sorry, I took the response as critical, and I've been pushing the developers to get this port out.

You will eventually get a chance to try it.
I've sent Radeon HD 7770 and 7850 cards to Mark "Bigfoot" Olsen for development work, but so far he has only used them as a dumb frame buffer (just to establish that they work).

And the focus is on getting the Terascale2 and earlier cards functioning first, as our drivers are evolutionary, BUT its always been planned to support the GCN cards (as far as I know).

I'm not sure established OS4 users are really a potential market for MorphOS. After all, both PPC NG OS' are rather similar, and frankly...there's more software available for OS4.

There are some advantages to MorphOS, but really its just a slightly different approach to the same idea (re-implementing the Amiga OS API).

Once I've set up my system, I honestly expect to be spending as much time using Linux as I do either OS4 or MorphOS, but I will have all three installed.

And I don't want to engender any hard feelings here, so my apologies for the abrupt hostility.
Its a knee jerk response related to some of my past experiences with the OS4 community, but those (few) negative interactions haven't dissuaded me from joining in using the product.

So...again, sorry.
