| After getting my tower and having nothing but issues with mediator and ide interface crashes and now the bitch wont even try to boot of hd. Think ide side may have died cant feel drive spinning. Getting tempted to sell it all and say sod it and wait for A1222 _________________ A1200 ACA1232 128MB Indivison MkIICr Elbox empty Power Tower RPi3 Emulating C64 ZX Atari PS BBC Wii with Amiga emulation Vampire v4 SA |

Take a deep breather. Don't want this to spiral out of control into another Classic/NG debate. |

NO debate needed. Has it been known before for a1200 ide to fail? think a lot of my problems are down to a flacky main board have another one that the sound has died on. _________________ A1200 ACA1232 128MB Indivison MkIICr Elbox empty Power Tower RPi3 Emulating C64 ZX Atari PS BBC Wii with Amiga emulation Vampire v4 SA |

I'm not saying the hardware isn't old (because the A1200 itself is older then me), I'm just saying to take a breather. I know how irritating computers get when they don't work (or even more so when they brake down). |

Yeah, get an estimate on a repair. Amigas are fun but all computers suck in a big way when they're flakey _________________ "Art challenges technology. Technology inspires the art." John Lasseter, Co-Founder of Pixar Animation Studios |

and people questioned why I prefer to use a new piece of hardware instead of performing a series of frankenstein jobs on existing 25 year old hardware. Yes the A1200 can be probably be repaired, but its the inconvenience and cost of doing so, and chances are something else will probably go wrong too further down the line
A new motherboard will be covered at least by a 2 year guarantee...

Indeed. I sent both my A600 and A1200 to be maintained and cleaned up by a local retroservice guy, and I was happy with his job. That said, since the A600 had a V600 installed, Ive barely used the A1200, so you COULD say the money spent on recapping and cleaning of the A1200 was a waste of money. I dont regret it, as it prolonged the life of the machine for years Im sure.
But with the V4 standalone, I suspect the V600 will suffer the same fate as the A1200, not being given a whole lot of attention.
So if I where you I would wait for either the A1222 or V4 Standalone. Which one you go for is a tossup as you have seen from the other thread of yours, and I suspect you will get more information regarding the direction and pace of development OSside/softwareside by the time they are open for purchase.
One aspect of AOS3x that suffers is internet surfing. Netsurf is improving, but at the moment its somewhat of a headache, and more a novelty than anything else. This COULD ofcourse change...
Again, the answer to that is probably several months down the road. |

Seeing as you are UK based, check the faceboook group NWAG and look up Russell Cowell. He does repairs, cleaning and recapping _________________ Fred Booth ======================================== A500, A600, A1200 c/w Mediator and 030 AmigaOne and OS4.1 Mac LCII, G4 Powermac running OSX + Amigakit and MorphOS 3.0 Dell Mini 10 Netbook running IcAros and AmigaForever+Amikit+AmigaSys 2006 Macb |

Bebek on Amibay has recapped a 1200 and a 600 for me. Quick turn around and good job. I'm sure he does repairs too.
Don't sell it - I still regret selling my towered A1200 with 68040 and multisync monitor nearly 20 years ago and have had a lot of pleasure with my car boot 1200 I bought about 5 years ago... |

Boot is possible only with small RAM cards, not CF cards via PCMCIA-CF adapter. You must use FDD (this may contain drivers for PCMCIA-CF partition). |

No you won't Not for a moment have a regretted selling mine, and it was a pretty beefed-up A4000 with a gfx card, a 040 accelerator and a Buddha IDE controller. I just got tired of various parts breaking all the time Unlike Scotch, hardware does not benefit from getting old.

If you've found a SAM440 an adequate replacement, that quite a positive statement about NG. Then again, once I moved to a 933 MHz Quicksilver Powermac with MorphOS, I had a similar experience.
