Hi Everyone,

I just recently bought an HP Deskjet 3722 for the home office here. When I was setting it up, HP has this new web printing feature. You pick an email address for your printer (example: printer1@hpeprint.com), and then, whatever document you send to that email address, the printer prints it.

This can be a work around for us Amiga users that do not have access to modern printers. The only downside, is, it will not print Final Writer documents for example, since it does not know what document format that is. However, it does print PDF well. So, if you do not have a printer directly connected to your Amiga, you can use this service as a work around. I myself have an old HP deskjet 810c hooked to my AmigaOne 500, but if I want a higher DPI print, I will be using this service instead.

It's an interesting idea. I can see it getting misused by lots of people to push adverts into your house though.

I use a laser jet 4550 with a JetDirect card. You can push stuff to it via FTP, so mounting an FTP file system and doing a redirect to file with a Postscript driver was always an option.

@Yogi27

Have you tried any of the Workbench HP printer drivers?

This can also work if they are on the network.

FinalWriter should be able to print as PDF. Or PS more likely. Printing direct to email, doubt it. But usually it goes through the driver, and sends it raster lines, to be printed. So not surprised a FW document won't be accepted. Can it export as RTF? As you said a work around. Generally you don't need a work around for a HP.

HP ePrint supports Google Cloud Print, so you could use gcp.device to print directly to it.

Not entirely true. There's no driver issue particularly, because they mostly support some variant of PCL or PS, however a lot of their printers use Dot4 for USB. If it's network connected, no problem, plenty of options, but often the USB won't work.

Are the Dot4 drivers we have buggy?

@Hypex

The one proper Dot4 driver we have was never completed. I had limited success with it.

Sounds typical. I can't see any other drivers included with OS4 either. But the last time there was a printer update in OS4 was... ever? Never?

@Yogi27

I just bought a Deskjet 3630 and it doesn't work with the PCL 3 driver on OS4. LOL. Should have known. Claims to be PCL3 GUI like my PhotoSmart. Looks like they dropped the PCL3 and kept the GUI! Typical. Not very impressed. Takes the phone app 30 minutes to print once it stops stuffing about provided it actually does print. Something is wrong with the world. I can't print with my Amiga and I can't print without it.

Most laser printer will do this when the document is sent by FTP ...

IMR there is a working FTP printer device on the Aminet.

The document has to be a Postcript file of course.

@Thread

I'm going to give the Raspberry Pi remote print program a whirl. Has anyone tried It?

@OldAmigan

I used CUPS on a first gen Pi as a printer driver for my Amiga.
Yes, it worked. But it took a REALLY long time to process each page.

Long enough that I kept wondering if it worked at all. I just couldn't get used to the delays.

Eventually I got a great deal on an HP color laser printer that would work directly from the AMiga.

I use that method all the time to print PDF or any non-ascii data to my HP Photosmart 6510.

Printing directly locks up my X1000 and/or printer even using the HP Photosmart driver

@lylehaze

The early Pis weren't really up to being print servers (they worked, but were a bit slow). The Pi2 is much better for this.
