| I've had Photogenics 5 for years now and besides JPG to IFF conversion and some burn effects I haven't really used it for much. Are there any tutorials for the basics? I've got the old Amiga Active tutorials but I think that was quite advanced. I'd would have thought it could be used to touch up photos etc but I can't figure it out; all those Pan Blur effects etc but no noticeable results! It uses a lot of processor power to do very little IMHO. I normally just use it on my 060 system for about 10 minutes before it a module stops responding, normally the left control bar with all the tools and options! Is there a patch to stop it being so unreliable? I think it had to be patched out of the box due to a JPG configuration issue!
Has anyone had better results?
P.S. I forgot about ArtEffect for the poll Last edited by BigD on 11-Aug-2017 at 04:19 PM.

I only tried some archaic 1.xx version. I was mainly DPaint/PPaint user with some work in TvPaint. |

It's my package of choice for any image editing and compositing I do on my Amiga. I find the rub through mode to be particularly useful. The complete manual should be on the CD. I have a printed copy somewhere but never really needed it for my uses.
I've used it under OS4 since I got an d it has stability issues there too but If run it under interpreted 68k emulation instead of JIT it is more stable than on my 060 and still a lot faster, fast enough to not care that it's not using the Petunia JIT.
The thing to remember is to save regularly.
If you ever get an OS4 system then Sketchblock is a good alternative. |

I can see that it's got potential for artistic creation and some touch up jobs but I must just be out of practise. Can you pick up brushes or use the equivalent of a clone tool? The real media brush types are programs highlight. I remember the old Mac in the Art departmentat school had similar 'real' art media options. I wish it had been an Amiga with Photogenics on as I might have learnt something

Interesting! How does the Rub Through mode work? I'm used to layers now so all this Image / Layer / Alpha / Secondary business is a bit confusing. Then there is the option to manipulate what you've painted before 'fixing' it right? _________________ "Art challenges technology. Technology inspires the art." | ArtEffect is my absolutely favourite. I've always tried occasionally others like FXPaint, Photogenics, ImageFX, etc, but work just gets finally done only with ArtEffect (its magic wand is really useful etc). Been that since A1200 times till MorphOS nowadays.
I do gfx for my programs, OS tuning, aftertouching scanned images and photos, etc. Nowadays my selection of programs on MorphOS is Showgirls for full image processing and converting, ArtEffect for fullcolor editing in more detail, and PPaint for pixel by pixel editing.

Oh, that's a good tip, thanks!

You load the foreground image as normal and the image you wish to rub through to as the secondary. Select the rub through mode and then you can then use the various painting and drawing tools to rub through to the secondary image. The more pressure you select the quicker it will rub through and if you want subtle effects or to blend area you can set the tool you're using to a lower pressure.
If you have graphic tablet Photogenics detects how much pressure you are using. I've used Andy Broad's driver and a Trust tablet in OS4. |
