@khayoz

Just to expand on the link, here is the announcement text:

"The team is working on the next CORE update which should be available soon.
The core update will give improved features, especially AMMX upgrades
to accelerate H264 video, SDL sprite operations, and complete AMMX to enable OpenCL.

An complete instruction list overview with examples is prepared to be ready for the release."

Also register your Vampire at

http://register.apollo-accelerators.com/ for updates. You'll need your Vampire serial number, download the tool linked at the bottom of the registration page and run it on the vampire to obtain your serial number.

@IanP,

You need a serial number to get a serial number? Must be from the dept. of redundancy dept!

@QuikSanz

? No. You need a tool to extract the serial number from the vampire. A link to download that tool is provided on the registration page.

Are you serious? I thought this was only possible with latest i7 processors (although that may just be the 4k / HD-R variant)! I doubt this can be done in software right now without hardware acceleration! If AMMX upgrades can do this it's impressive!

Play videos from the 264 series C16/+4 computers? Yes that should be possible!

The idea behind these instructions is to make writing software decoders easier/more efficient.

How much can be decoded and at what bitrate/resolution is not going to be known until someone takes up the task.

I wouldn't expect to be able to decode Blu-Ray disks/ISOs on a V2+ but maybe on a V4? It has much more memory bandwidth.

First of all, what follows is my strictly personal opinion.

From a technical standpoint, these efforts are to be applauded.

Care must be taken however not to run into any patents or copyright.

Apparently, it seems unclear to people here that the ISA of a CPU can be covered by patents or even qualify for copyright protection.

So a reimplementation of the same ISA (instruction set architecture), be it PPC or even 68K in a FPGA, might run into issues on the intellectual property front.

In fact, Intel made a pretty obvious threat to Microsoft recently about emulation of its ISA on ARM CPU's.

An interesting article about that can be found here:

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/06/09/intel_sends_arm_a_shot_across_bow/

If I were legal counsel to the Apollo developers, I would advise them to thread very carefully and ideally get licenses in place.

US companies are notoriously prone to litigation to protect their IP and flying under the radar is no longer an option when you got so much mainstream coverage.

@HyperionHolding

I remember our old threads on AW talking about IV4/IV5/realmedia/wmv9 etc. and legality of using these codecs. Apollo now speaks of h264 codec.

Older Amiga program "frogger" used linux codecs but finally had to eliminate them.

That's something I'm sure they should look into.

Hello -

I know the team spoke with Motorola (or whatever they were called at the time) and got some sort of "no problem" when asking if it was going to be an issue taking the 68K ISA forward into an FPGA. Now this is just my vague recollection of a forum discussion long ago so don't hold me to this. But they did their due diligence up front.

Whether that still holds true with the new landlord, or if the AMMX instructions could cause an issue going forward, I have no idea.

I am sure if/when the time comes something will be worked out.

Cheers!

H.264 decoder is license-free with under 100K units shipped: http://www.mpegla.com/main/programs/AVC/Documents/avcweb.pdf

Just remember that the announcement on the 2.7 release is only covering new CPU instructions. It is not announcing decoders. These new instructions aim to make writing decoders easier/more efficient.

This is a nearly 30 year-old architecture. The majority of it is older than the LZW patent that caused problems for GIF, all of which expired more than ten years ago. Would a patent on the ISA last that long?

Moreover, it is routine for companies to copy other ISAs, especially when they are abandoned, but even when they are not (see Philips 68070, Hitachi 6309, AMD's x86 clones, Transmeta). So I'm not real sure what grounds Intel thinks it's on here, especially since it was Transmeta that "won" (via settlement) a patent infringement case against Intel, not the other way around.

If you'd care to elaborate, what with you being an actual lawyer and my being an outside observer, I'd be keen to learn more, personal opinion or otherwise.

@gregthecanuck

They should study FFPEG, figure out what hardware support FFPEG support, and re implement the hardware decoding chips.

SIMD instructions will only optimize some parts of the decoding process, not all.

They can do hardware decoding in the FPGA, that be really fast. If this done you play videos the CPU can't do on its own, is there any space left in the FPGA? Then it comes down to memory speed, and moving data, the issue here is slow IDE controller, the CPU will need to fetch the data that is going to decoded, and to some degree, is going to have to do some of the work, getting it from disk and to the display.
