Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for a bit of advice, My A1200 has (I assume) "Stock" 3.1 ROMS from AmigaKit, what benefits (if any) are there if I were to replace them with either Colanto's 3.x / Hyperion's 3.1 ROMs?

I'm Currently running OS 3.9 with BB1 ROM Update. (The BB2 update doesn't seem to work)

Thanks,

Wizz.

@Wizzard_o

Nothing of substance.

You should sort this problom out, before introducing possible new bugs with new ROM.

Good advice, no point in upgrading from 3.1...to 3.1.

@Wizzard_o,

The Cloanto one does have newer libs built in but some people don't get the workbench.library installed properly. Maybe because they use the original OS disk with no lib on it.

Stick with 3.1. I went to 3.X and it is such a pain with Workbench.library not being easy to install. I ended up puting the Amiga's harddrive into WinUAE to transfer the file over.

@smartroad

That's not a very smartroad to go. AFAIK, the reason people are using Kickstart 3.X on a 3.1 setup, is to get...

* Updated C/Version command (Y2K patch)

* Addition of Libs/workbench.library (for A-4000T 3.1 ROMs and 3.X ROMs)

* Updated S/Startup-Sequence (conditional SetPatch, for 3.X ROMs)

* Increased MultiView stack to 32768

* Installer script improvements

* Updated Installer (43.3 or 44.10, depending on CPU)

* Installer itself is now part of the system installation (inside the Utilities directory)

* FastFileSystem 45.9 (to support large disks (4GB+))

...which requires Cloanto's Workbench 3.1. You should be able to get this from the same source from which you purchase the ROM. The workbench.library is included, so there is no difficulty whatsoever. But if you don't need/want run-time large disk support (what?! ), then indeed, go for the plain 3.1 ROM and the old Commodore published Workbench (Cloanto is publishing 1.3 ROM's, 2.05 ROM's, 3.1 ROM's and 3.X ROM's, see for example http://www.vesalia.de/e_kickstart.htm, as well as all the corresponding Workbench versions. Use them in pairs.)

Another thought is to use Workbench 3.X instead (with the 3.X ROM), which essentially is AmigaOS 3.9 with the biggest difference that it's still being published...

You need to be a bit more specific. In what way does it not work?

I don't think there's any point in getting either new version of the ROM since everybody managed just fine before.

I agree that it's confusing that they used the same version number for updated releases, Cloanto's Workbench 3.1 updates could very well have been released as Workbench 3.2 and spared people some confusion, but it wasn't. It's 3.1.

And then comes Hyperion publishing yet another Workbench 3.1 with updates (let's call it "the Boing Ball Branch" release of 3.1) that differs from Commodore/Cloanto version (let's call it "the Checkmark branch").

It is how it is...

@Wizzard_o

BB2 rom update has it problems. You don't need to worry about that.

Those Hyperion's / Cloanto's roms are handy for those who wants to leagal way to emulate AMiga without owning Amiga.

You could create your own custom 1mb kickstart. That way you could use your usb mouse and keyboard without OS loaded.

@everyone

Thanks for the advise guys, I think i'll stick with what i'm using for the time being.

The BB2 ROM locks up my system after the Setpatch restart, the system then fails to "see" any of my hard disk's partitions and fails to mount my CD Drive (attached to primary slave, though an IDE spiltter), Its probably a bug with the newer scsi.device in the ROM.

Wizz.

@Wizzard_o

That sounds like a known and documented issue with BB2's scsi.device and some large drives that use LBA48 addressing. LBA48 is used by drives over 128GB, but sometimes also by drives below that size too, even though they don't strictly need to. There are patches for the device driver around, such as version 43.45, which can be downloaded here. Just make sure to follow the instructions carefully and your crashes should be eliminated.
