If you have the 2000 you only need the one Amiga. Just fire up Textcraft. Save as TEXT only and then have a PC1 drive in DEVS/DosDrivers and CrossDOSFileSystem in L so that when you put a PC formatted disk in the DF1 it is read as a PC disk and lets you copy over files that can then be read on any PC.

Seriously don't know what a Gotek is... Thought he was an Australian singer.

Have fun

The USB based floppy drive emulator. In any case it looks like I can boot 1.3WB on a 1.2 Kickstart so if my efforts with this died I will do that, or just use Amiga Explorer (which might be faster anyways tho I don't know).

Ok so I have gotten to the stage where I can now attack this head on. But, not how I had expected. I had thought I would be able to use the Gotek and have just empty directories programmed as empty disks because I have seen AtariST ones do that (Non HxC). But that didn't pan out at all, nor is that how THIS gotek drive works. However, I did find a compilation of Workbench roms with relative kickstart packaged in with them so even though I have Kick 1.2 I can run WB1.3 and possibly higher, though I only tried 1.1, 1.2 (which was set up for an A500 but still booted?), and 1.3.

My plan, now, is to boot to 1.3 or 2.0 and use the DOS disk functions listed above (by now 4 people I believe) and do all that save mumbojumbo and HOPEFULLY be able to save to a DOS disk and pull all the text off the disks which, to me, seems VASTLY less complicated than my previous plans and ideas.

I'm only nervous about one thing. That being that I have to have the gotek as DF0 to do all this magic. I plan on playing games later on and I'm unsure of how many games actually have a workbench packaged in (I am not an aged amiga user, mostly an AROS enthusiast [as far as basic use and dev tracking]), which seems normal for the time? Tell me that my assumption is correct? I'm very much unsure.

In any case, I have very few things left to do to this machine. Need an 030 or 040 accelerator, 3.1 kick, and something for a hard drive system. If nothing else, getting this thing up to 3.1 and ripping it all up will eventually give me access to all sorts of tools that I don't have access to at the moment to pull the data off, but maybe that won't need to happen! (which is preferable as I am out of funds to spend on this).

Will keep you all posted as needed or requested. This is a LOT easier than DOS machines D:
God forbid DEC Alpha's that I have tooled with.

TextCraft may not work on 2.0 (doesn´t work on 3.1 which is similar compatibility-wise).

I´m not sure TextCraft will be able to save to anything other than default DF0 or DF1 - PC0/PC1 drive could be unreachable for it. However, you can save to DFx first and then copy to PCx device.

Most floppy based games will work out of the box on your A2000. All of the OS they need is ROM you have bulit-in.

CPU board with RAM and SCSI may be the best solution for you, I don´t think 68040 is really necessary, depends on your needs. A2000 has plenty of expansion slots, there are many choices, if you have enough money... You can even buy new FPGA based GFX card (not fast, but enough for basic use). Note upgrading to 68020 and higher and Kick 3.1 may lead to loss of compatibility with some old games. You may install these to HDD via WHDLoad, but sometimes more Chip RAM is required than available on OCS based machines (if your A2000 has 1 MB Chip RAM, you should be fine).

Ok so I'm working on this again.

I can boot the machine into workbench 1.3 with the 1.2 kickstart. How do I put applications into the ramdisk? If I can just boot into 1.3 from the gotek, put Textcraft into ram, and then copy the files into ram, then save said files to a DOS floppy I stick in, I think that will work (maybe).

Please tell me this will work. I've been having a hell of a time trying to get the factory shipped floppy drive to work with the gotek installed. I did the jumpers, have changed the cables all around... I'm ready to sell that floppy drive and just get 2 more external drives.

Thanks!!!

You may use CLI (Shell) - icon is in the "root" directory of WB disk.

You mean disk in MS DOS format (FAT)? I fear OS1.3 has only basic support for FAT media (5.25" external disk drive).

I have no experience with Gotek, but threads on many forums show several dificulties with approach similar to yours. Being on your place, I would try the AmigaExplorer route or similar solution. Simply convert all FDs to ADFs and use them under emulation for actual textcraft to txt conversion.

You may also try other Amiga forums to find answers: amiga.org or eab.abime.net (which is more "classic" related than AW).

I've also thought about using icaros for disk recovery. Any features like that in it? It would be really nice if I could stick an ADF format floppy disk into an icaros machine and just open it and pull the files.

You're making this much more difficult than it has to be. Load AmigaExplorer on your PC and run a serial cable from the PC to your Amiga. AmigaExplorer can access the Amiga's drives from your PC allowing you to copy the files over to your PC using an Explorer interface.

You can download it for free from here: https://www.amigaforever.com/ae/

If you pay for a license key it will save your settings on exit, otherwise it's fully functional.

I would do that if I had a PC on hand that was old enough to do null modem stuff.

@dommer416

Modern computers can do NULL modem stuff just fine with a USB to serial port cable.

You can get one for nearly nothing on eBay. Here's one for $1.29 https://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-2-0-TO-SERIAL-RS232-DB9-9-PIN-ADAPTER-CABLE-PDA-cord-GPS-CONVERTER/262484574431?epid=1187873026&hash=item3d1d4cc0df:g:vegAAOSwvg9XYRCV

and a NULL modem cable for $5.00 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Tripp-Lite-Null-Modem-Serial-RS232-Cable-DB9-to-DB25-F-M-6-ft-P456-006/263018045541?hash=item3d3d18e065:g:RdcAAOSwIaFZMpiG

If that's too much trouble and expense for you, then I wish you the best of luck.

Isn't he that French fashion designer Jean-Paul Gotye. Still none the wiser.
