@tlosm
I dont understand why you buy X5000/020 and after 040 for run linux ppc..in same side i never will buy a G5 for linux maybe yes for run morphos but never for linux ppc or OSX.
Linux ppc have also tons of software limitations for daily use.
No Steam,no skype...etc etc.
Sure X5000/040 is a dream computer for run Amigaos and maybe Morphos in near future.
I can only say good words for Trevor and the efford for made new hardware and software for Amigaos...not cheap yes is true but is the only we have and without it is best all buy a new intel I7 Mercedes with linux or Windows and then we can closed this forum.
Sorry for my poor english

@AlicePPC

as I understand it he had different expectations compared to others when buying X5000. He expected to get the most modern and fastest PPC desktop and is disappointed now, others buy it just for AmigaOS so they naturally are not interested in Linux and do not compare it with G5 where AmigaOS not runs

steam you will never have because there is not a wine on PPC.
skype the same ... skype only on chat works for the same reason i wrote before.

why buy an x5000/40? for use linux ppc in smp ...if only for amiga os was good the P5010 .

because i love ppc

normally not only processor is faster on new hardware but every component, expecially if new hardware is expensive. So he had wrong expectations there and is disappointed. Others have different expectations and are happy. If you are only interested in running AmigaOS and do not care about other PPC hardware you are satisfied propably despite the high price.

i buy x5000/40 because on paper have to be faster than g5 quad ...
Mhz are relative ... for sure a dual i5 2.3 ghz are faster than Pentium D 3.0 ghz.

P5040 2013 cpu / 970MP 2005 cpu
ddr3 1600 / ddr2 667
2 mb L3 / 0 L3
sata 2 / sata 1
Pcie 2.x / Pcie 1.1
silent / noisy
low weight / really heavy 28kg
low temperature /hi temperature ... in summer g5 is unusable because made ambient temperature hot

more expandable / less expandable

but paper is not true

Looks decent to me tbh, not top of the line but not *that* bad as well. Although I would like to see some raytracing benchmark and the likes. Hey, at least you don't get fps drop like I used to get even on... TBS games (Wesnoth) on my OS4/440ep back in the day lol.

Note that on my single core G5 I can stream 720p YT videos under MorphOS without any frame drop or out-of-sync on OWB though.

Still I assume that Linux on G5 must be much more optimized given its expanded life cycle over the years, so it's kinda natural to have better experience on old Apple hardware. With time, things might improve on the x5k as well.

Well, at least I can assure you that OSX on the 2.5ghz G5 is much worse in some areas than MorphOS including internet browsing: OWB can stream YT videos up to 720p, crash free, rendering faster most webpages (at least the ones I visit :)) than Safari or even TenFourFox, on video playback: mPlayer can playback 1080p h264/5 mkv modern files without sweating whereas QuickTime and VLC might use 100% cpu and/or crash and I get comparable fps if not better on Q3 on Mos than OSX.

Still, I have seen and discuss in person with some local friends your YT videos of the Linux G5 Quad in the past and it's ultra impressive what you have achieved.

Btw, I had tried many years ago one Ubuntu version on my G4 (my 2nd registered machine) and it felt much slower both than MacOS and MorphOS. Didn't bother to run benchmarks though to justify what was wrong with it.

That's why I believe that in time, things might improve on the x5k as well. G4 linux ppc ports were abandoned pretty much years ago than heavily optimized G5 editions. Perhaps if you give it some time, things might/will be better.

@Cool_amigaN

i know mos is much more optimized but on 970MP there is no mos and the best os is osx for drivers etc etc.. linux is just more updated.
note here i was able to play 1080p video when flash player was working on youtube . i can play fullhd video on vlc 4 at same time etc :)

check video

Relax, go somewhere for a walk, maybe forest, pub or something like that.
There is no need to do antyhing in a hurry.

According Amiga X5000 linux ppc g5 etc.
Most of us, amiga users has more than one ppc amiga.
It will be cool to have linux fully working on every of it.
But, if it is not working, or working slower than expected it is not big problem.
One can always use another ppc machine.
I have for example Amiga 500 1 GHz with HD 7750 card.
Linux not works ont it? So what?
I can use one of my few mm G4.
Relax, keep calm.

@All

I was Amiga NG developer and evangelist until my interest vanished!

I must agree with tlosm here, the X5000 is certainly an overpriced system for what you get.

Moreover technically speaking is a rather underpowered system clearly designed to run Linux rather than OS4.

Last but not least, since OS4 can' t handle multicore the system is also not exploited.
And I don' t want to say more.
