I have just played Fightin' Spirit on the Amiga and think it's the best Amiga fighter by some margin. I will always have a soft spot for Mortal Kombat 2 but in terms of the mastery of the hardware and making a complete package with CD32 pad support and great sound, digital speech , graphics and good special moves I think it edges MK2.

So here's the poll:

Which is the Amiga's best 2D fighter?

Hmmm, Elfmania is missing, is that because it features truly Amiga hardware accelerated 3d graphics?

@Hypex

Hmm... forgot about that one. Whoops. Fighting elves is a bit of a specialised market (and too cutesy IMHO) but the graphics look good. I think the concensus is that it was technical stunning (only required OCS/ECS = wow) but it suffered from a lack of special moves, only 1-button joystick support and quite limited playability. I think my list focuses on playability (although Capital Punishment may be a candidate for swapping with Elfmania but even that had 2-button support).

Fighting Spirit isn't a bad game and is reminiscent of something you find on a Neo Geo machine but Rise of the Robots is shocking and Primal Rage or Shaq- Fu even more so...

@Templario

There's better AGA games but for OCS/ECS I'd say MK2 is the best. The best OCS/ECS game is Ruff N' Tumble that really is awesome.

Mk2 on ECS/OCS hum, I think even Shadow Fighter and its seven disk is better than Mortal Kombat 2 but for number of disk Elfmania two disk and big backgrouds with visual effects.

Voted for Ultimate Body Blows (CD32), however a close seconds would be Elfmania which I brought back in the day for my A2000 & still love it - had a go on it the other week with my nephew ... great fun although he prefers IK+ which would be a close 3rd for me with Capital Punishment bringing up the rear.

CP would run out of chip ram for me a lot of the time which was a real pain but these days it works great via whload.

@Amiboy

Rise of the Robots is at least playable imho & looks good! If we are being inclusive here
then where is Dangerous Streets

Considering Clickboom! published Napalm the seminal RTS for the Amiga which is ignored by every Kickstarted Amiga game book and documentary that has been produced in the last 5 years then I think it is funny that the Clickboom! game Capital Punishment has eclipsed Elfmania on this thread!

I for one have no interest in playing as an Elf in a fighting game and the backgrounds remind me of Oscar which was a fairly pretty but a dull game. Fighting games are about PLAYABILITY and you don't get very far with a one button joystick and one special move per elf!!!

If we want to argue as to why there are not more A500 games on this list then let's postulate that the A500 should have been sold up until 1993 (no A500+ or A600 was necessary) and then quietly retired in favour of the A1200. CD-ROM games and CD32 pads should have become standard on all Amigas (AGA only obviously) from 1993. A500 owners should not have expected massive software support beyond 1993 except for possibly Worms! Elfmania, Ruff N' Tumble etc were only released on OCS/ECS because NOT ENOUGH people had upgraded by 1994 and the developers needed to get their money back! It was an indicator that the Amiga was both ahead of its time and also dying

Maybe I feel this way because by 1993 the Atari ST (my machine at the time) was dead from a software support angle Hence if I wanted to upgrade then an Amiga 1200, Atari Falcon or PC were the only sane options. I had to give up on my ST so I didn't understand why Amiga 500 owners didn't upgrade to the A1200 (or CD32) to make sure their machine didn't go the way of the ST/Falcon!! I still don't understand it or the mass pirating and X-Copy parties! It was such a weird time. Soon everyone had moved on to playing Doom on the PC or GoldenEye on the N64 and they suddenly didn't mind paying £60 for a Nintendo cartridge or £2000 on a new Windows 95 PC!!!

P.S. By the time my parents agreed to let me have an Amiga for Christmas 1994 Commodore were dead and A1200s were in short supply so I had to have a CD32. Ultimate Body Blows was great during that time but in retrospect I think I should have bought Fightin' Spirit when it came out as it is great!

In 1994 in some countries was more easy buy one Amiga 500, Amiga 500+ and Amiga 600 than one Amiga 1200. Also many people didn't upgraded their Amiga computers because the piraty, there were many pirate games and people selling or lending disks. Also Commodore had the guilty to make the 500+ and 600 using the 500 as base, they didn't learned the Amstrad lesson with its Amstrad CPC Plus and their crashed.

ElfMania is technically and visually astonishing but sounds are poor and playability is far from being good.

IIRC Elfmania also featured the Elf hot chicks.

Why I liked it, maybe not so much the game, but because of the 3d floor sliding left and right. Obviously this was a copper trick. This is also what I'd call real Amiga accelerated 3d graphics. I had hoped to see this type of real Amiga acceleration in more games with 3d effects. Unfortunately after that game developers just wanted to copy blocky PC chunky 3d games and the Amiga just lost it.

You found Oscar dull? My first all time favourite A1200 AGA game? Yes it was pretty but I liked playing it with the crisp 24-bit AGA palette and water reflective effects. Rollin'!

While fighting games are not my cup of tea I feel they really capture some themes and categories regarding amiga games so if you allow me I prefer to take this into a discussion which my cup.

Judging a game has always been an issue becaue we don't have the history of film and books to fall on before pointing out what simply attracts people like a shiny object.

So to sum matters up I'll address both from a basic gameplay pov and one that which is more gestalt, has every element pinned down much like a lot of games of amiga's style.

One game that had its fighting style and basic gameplay really pinned down was IK+. From a complete amiga stance it is lacking but from a gameplay first stance (which is more important after all is said and done) no other game have managed to reproduce its spot-on gameplay. The closest I can think of are The Strangers and maybe Double Dragon 3.

I think that the Body Blows series kinda tried to push the genre too far for what amiga could do an it is sometimes a mess. Not to say it's not fun because it is. Just not at the top of said ranking.

I actually like Mortal Kombat better than 2, because I feel it was cool and more special than 2. I know the port could have been better, it always can be just like people tend to find defects in complete games/movie/books/etc... As a veteran gamer that saw the industry leave him behind until the indie and kickstarter scene erupted, I can say that there is a criteria called "good for what it is" that I think MK accomplishes better than others.

I guess when amiga fighting games tried to copy MK or SF or King of Fighters it always seemed somewhat forced and not that fun. A game like Fighting Spirit is such an example - it has a lot going for it just doesn't managed to tie everything together. I prefer a game like Full Contact because of its art direction in every sense and the way it presented fights which was different. Let's also say I'm no fan of Street Fighter and its clones.

Regrading Elfmania, I think it embodies what an amiga game was when it was really made by people appreciating the moment and the complete capabilites beyond just a game that nails gameplay and sells (like Doom). The right graphics and sounds and movements combined with a certain lack of basic approach to a fight setting that took it to a cuter place (lose the freaking coins!) which wasn't quite what you had in mind when entering a fight game.

And of course, we can't talk about amiga games from back then without mentioning a cheat of some sort, so today if you try again the seriously flawed game Pit Fighter with JIT it accelerates the game to being quite cool

Capital Punishment? a name so fitting anyone whose not a masochist H-A-R-D

Oh I just had to add something about that game - if they simply have managed to bring more endearing features and presentation to a superior fighting game model like Best of the Best/Panza then that would have won the prize. Kinda ironic for a game about prize fighters...
