Hyperion announces that, from now on, all development for AmigaOS 4.x will be done in a "civilized" language like Ada or Modula-3, for which Tom Breeden has produced a new compiler: C and C++ are banned for ever.

How ever did you find out?
But it is pretty to think that such a thing could happen.

Mostly, I was just knocked off my chair seeing something about Modula in the Amiga discussions.

However, if you are interested in contributing to "civilization" for AmigaOS,
I recommend visiting the GNU Modula-2 pages (Gaius Mulley's work)
GNU Modula-2 Pages

It should be possible to port this to AmigaOS. Unfortunately, I'm too much of
and old dog to learn the details of Linux and the GCC package needed to do that.

Another active project that you might want to investigate is the M2R10 updated Modula-2
started by B.Kowarsch and R.Sutcliffe with sources on GitHub.com.
It has some beautiful ideas on type safe generic programming which may even get
into GNU M2 at some time in the future.
Modula-2 R10 Blueprints

tom

Or the display quality (which apparently was enough of an issue for Acill to pull back on the idea of a MorphOS demo)?

Look, I'm as fond of legacy hardware as the next guy, but maybe something better than a video toaster needs to be used.

The university I work at uses modern Newtek hardware and software, and their live streams look SO much better.

And HEY Kronos, I'm not 70 yet. In fact, in about ten years, about the time NXP phases out PPCs, I'll be 67 and considering retirement.

MAYBE we'll have MorphOS X64 by then.

I think any discussion of the stream belongs in the live stream thread.

Source

Nevertheless, here's a comparison with an earlier Amiga event:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdZ5zIAFaCs

Perhaps given that most viewers (by 4 or 5 to 1) watched the utube stream as opposed to the shoutcast stream (mostly targetted for Amiga users), perhaps it's time for a dialog on that topic. Frankly Bill welcomes and respects input and often requests such feedback after AmiWest.

Hmm, I may just have to adopt that.
But I'm old enough that I still have Creative Computing issues from the late '70s, I followed the development of SWTPC's systems, and I used 6809 and 68000 systems in the '80s and '90s.

As well as managing a company that sold 68K based computer systems that ran Microware OS9.

Amigas? That was originally just something I followed at a distance. For Commodore hardware, it was actually pretty expensive.

And if I hadn't been involved in other 68K projects, I probably would have bought (God forbid) an Atari ST system.

On Atari's, I still have on of the last systems that incorporated components designed by Jay Miner, the 130XE, although mine has an enhanced VDP, dual sound chips, and a Hitachi 6309 cpu.

Yep, just replying to the post on stream issues.
Actually, I thought the coverage went off pretty well, considering it was a live event.

The fact that it can be done with some of this legacy equipment is a testament to how advanced it was.

Yeah, 80 column displays on 8-bit systems were cool.
Its one of the feature of the Color Computer 3 I like (along with the MMU).

Its a shame the C128 didn't have a better implementation of this.

Couldn't you do that with a CoCo if you upgraded the video generating chip? My father had done something like that, though I think it was generally unused.

Alas, I don't have an Amiga any more; I sold my A500 (along with the M2 compiler) almost 20 years ago, bought an A1200 sometime in 2000 but it became painfully clear that it wasn't going to do the job for work, so I sold that, too. I somehow acquired an A3000 at some point but didn't do a blessed thing with it for 2 or 3 years so I gave it away to a member of the NC Amiga club before moving to my present location. :Now I just don't have money.

I have actually followed Gnu M2 for a while but I couldn't get it to build the first couple of times, because they always wanted an ancient gcc. It looks as if they've actually done quite a lot with it lately (you can actually running on a gcc released in the past year!!!) so I will have to look at that.

Wow, that scratches a lot of my itches, especially the blueprints features. I'll have to look into it if I can only ever find the time. I tried downloading it but it doesn't compile; aside from inlining issues (using a different gcc?) they try to call "get_real_number_tail" somewhere, which function isn't define anywhere, near as I can tell. From the code it looks as if it's supposed to read the tail of a real number; i.e., the part that comes after the decimal.

Also looks as if it hasn't been worked on in over a year now.
