Haiku (if it was officially supported on ARM) would be a WAY better choice for the RaspberryPi than PixelOS. Hopefully Haiku will get on the Pi in the near future.

I think Haiku would have GNU/Linux beat in performance on such hardware. The maturity and availabilty of apps however would make GNU/Linux a more viable solution.

There's a new version of that, and they seem to have changed the name from PIXEL to "Raspberry Pi Desktop." I don't know the reason for the name change, but I tried the new version a few weeks ago, and it works well, at least on my hardware (Kaby Lake i5 with integrated graphics).
@bison I looked right at that and did not even notice.
I have it on 3 high(er) end machines and it has saved me having to re-install my main distro a few times. In fact I'm using it for this post and writing a program for the Pi that I will transfer later. It does everything I need.
