| Hi
First of all I don't know how tu use Linux at all.On my A1 X5000.I want to install roms and samples and probably CHDS for my Linux MAME.I want QEmu or Wine to install Windows and run PC apps and games.I want to install latest kernel of Ubuntu PPC with the correct USB stick (maybe one of 8.1 GB?)
So as I don't know so much from Linux I want to learn and explore
Can anybody help me? _________________ AMIGA 500 1.5 MB ACA500/ACA1232 accelerators AMIGA 500 German CD32 unexpanded Amiga 1200 Tower on AmigaKit since years AMIGA 1300 030/50 Mhz/32 MB WB 3.9 with lots of games&demos AMIGA ONE XE G3 PPC 800 Mhz/1 GB RAM/RADEON 9250 128 MB/SATA CONTROLLER |

I don't know of any Amiga-specific Ubuntu resources, but these may be useful as a start:
Ubuntu: A Beginner's Guide
Ubuntu Desktop Guide
Both are up-to-date.

I'd be glad to be corrected if I'm wrong, but Wine won't work on PowerPC; it only works on x86. That's part of the point; Wine is actually a recursive acronym for "WINE Is Not Emulation." It basically runs x86 code as is and traps operating system calls only. Even then, a lot of stuff still won't work.
As for QEmu, while you can probably get it to run (thought I don't know how) it will probably be too slow for anything CPU-intensive, which most likely includes games. (Maybe not Minesweeper though.)
If you're going to run Linux, I personally think the thing to do is to abandon Windows thinking as much as possible and embrace it for what it is._________________ I've decided to follow an awful lot of people I respect and leave AmigaWorld. I think you can get cca Pentium 100 performance with Qemu on the X5000, which is enough for early Windows 95 games (Diablo, Dungeon Keeper, Civilization 2 etc.). |

I don't know about those other games, but you might as well play FreeCiv at full juice than emulate Civ2. _________________ I've decided to follow an awful lot of people I respect and leave AmigaWorld. If for some reason you want to talk to me, it shouldn't take much effort to find me. |

Well, I like Civ2 more than FreeCiv.
Of course, he can play Civ2 under Basilisk2 on OS4 too. |

Then you shouldn't try to use it on a X5000, because everything regarding Linux is more complicated on an X5000. Do you have another PC running Windows? If so, install the Windows version of Virtualbox and play around with Linux inside Virtualbox. That's perfect for 'learning and exploring' because you can't do any damage, and it's still very fast.

WINE doesn't work on PPC computers like the X5000. Qemu will be way too slow for any games released in the last 20 years.

Neat. So you're running that via an emulator?Last edited by simplex on 04-Dec-2017 at 11:01 PM.
