A friend commented I must be quite the minority using workbench with the window left enabled. I have always preferred it that way (except when I need a few k of RAM and backdrop does save that much!)

What do you guys prefer? Window, Backdrop or Pancakes?!

@A1200

I think the day I got my A1200 back in August 1996, I flicked to Workbench windowed and thought "why would you want that?", then promptly switched it back and have never changed it since.

@A1200

Acccording to my OS4 Workbench I have it as backdrop. I just looked back to see what I had it set as. But when there are too many windows open and I can't find my Workbench anymore I Amiga-B it to bring it above the rest.

Backdrop. Windowed seems too much like Windows 3.x Program Manager.

backdrop on my OS4.1FE/ 3.9 systems and my Amiga 1000 with kick/OS1.3 doesn't need backdrops to look pretty

@A1200

Backdrop all the way, I've never liked it in a window.

I also like a clean tidy workbench or desktop on other OS's no icons all over the place only the system disk icons where applicable.

After 66 votes it's clear by far most prefer the backdrop option
I also prefer the backdrop option, one of the first settings i adjust after a fresh install.

@A1200

I tried it once on my A1000 back in '85 and never again...

I would usw it thought with a few uogrades:

· Borderless option

· Transparent option

· Menus work when the workbench window is inactive. eg. clicking on the 'screen' auto actives the workbench window.

With those changes you could use it to position your drive icons anywhere you want, eg. along the bottom with the drive labels off screen.

Worbench also needs the ability to put the icon text to the left or right of the icon as well.

@A1200

I never thought to change it from Windowed to be honest. It helps give the option to bring the Workbench to the front if I need the partition icons.

@A1200

Can you explain why you like it windowed?
I'm one of those that used it only once and for a few seconds only.

@elwood

Like BigD I just am used to it and being able to switch forward and back the workbench via the window it just seems right. I used Windows 3.x before I used an Amiga so perhaps that influenced things too.

@A1200

If you have a small monitor screen and like all your large colourful icons its great having a windowed workbench cus I can have loads of icons off screen leaving a large open desktop as a working area. I have like an endless scrolling window full of network icons for countless machines and as I scroll along I have associated files sitting next to various icons. I design all my own icons and they are very large as I like pictures on the desktop. Also with the scroll I get a different feel to the screen depending on what I am doing.

Working on a 14" for the most part the window is the best option. And it never becomes a problem when I bang in an old Amiga Computing cover that has an icon half the size of the screen. Some icons don't even appear on a backdrop. Very annoying.

My screens are always busy and ever changing.

So window.. wouldn't use anything else. Also flicking front to back is something I am doing a lot. Windows are always on the move. More control.

@thread,

I keep my desktop clean for lots of real estate. Windowed does not work for this really. Plenty of room for windows and all programs are where I put them.
