on quad g5 the best performance in gaming you can see only on leopard this because it have cuda and catalyst . there on leopard you can use the best x86 emulator virtualpc.
linux is better for ubuntu mate for the firefox if you have a radeonhd gpu.
the best cpu optimizations and performances you can see if you install debian ppc64 of fedora ppc64. this two distro made the g5 put out all it power in 64bit.
and in full 64 bit mode i see the big difference compared x5000/40 pratically the double of user experience everyware.

Hmm I think I have to try Fedora. Does it come on a ready to install ISO for PPC64?

I do not have a Radeon on my Quad G5.

I want to try a Linux distro for the most modern software included -firefox for example- What browser is included on Fedora? Will I be able to Install VLC / PPC in there?

I have tried Ubuntu mate on another G5 with radeon -a single core one- and it was blazing fast even on the Live session.

Since you recommend Radion for the Mate / Firefox combo. I will try it on another G5 / dual machine.

Bonus: On the PowerMac g4 world the Radeon support on Ubuntu is kind of broken on the latest versions. Still running version 13 of the standards Ubuntu PPC release. on two PowerMac G4s I have in here. Mate was not working, and newer standrad Ubuntu PPC releases were not working also.

However on the single G5 with Radeon that I tried Ubuntu mate live Cd it was working blazing fast and with no problems.

dd the image on a partition, or i use gnome-disk manager exploding the img to a partition.
after is need to configure a yaboot.
The best way is install ubuntu 14.0.x on a small partition and use it for made the yaboot configurations and use the gnome-disk manager

It looks like your best bet is for tlosm to give you some assistance. Given Skype doesn't run on Linux PPC, but it does run on Linux x86, you may need him to guide you in installing QEmu that you want with the Linux version if possible or Windows emulation as in the picture. Skype can run without cam AFAIK but the point of using it was for video chat usually.

As for VLC player this is ported to PPC, so what problem does it have running?

skype x86 run on ppc , with my tricky trickenss.. but for now is not clean tricky and make skype crash in many occasions :P
the vlc dont work on X5000 missing altivec .

by the way there is the a-eon linux support team for do this things ... i dont have any more an x5000 and cant help about because cant test the new great advantage of this super computer.

Well the first place to start would be Synaptic or whatever it uses for the package manager. Making sure to use all the sources to pick up extra stuff. QEmu should show up.

For Skype that will need x86 emulation. And I haven't set that up on Ubuntu PPC.

It looks like VLC is failing to due to lack of vectors and AEON putting a whopping fat G3 CPU on there. So you will need to compile it yourself. Start by looking here:

So download source, extract and cd to location in terminal. That lists a few commands to prepare for it. We need to customise the building line. So when it comes to the configure script this needs to be added like so.
./configure--disable-altivec.

Then a make. Wait forever with no errors hopefully. To install a "sudo make install".

The one player that works out of the box on the X5000 is mpv .
Nice combo with smplayer and youtube browser for smplayer .
Of course to get the full performance playback one needs a video card before the Radeon SI generation .
