| Anyone know much about the hacked os4.1 that runs on pearpc doing the rounds?
And before anyone gets their panties in a twist and spews crap typical of this community I'm just curious about it's herritage. Those inclined can turn of their "bloody obvious, but irrelevant" disorders. I don't need to know it's illegal, I don't need to know how well it runs or its fpu performance, or if it supports hardware compositioning, etc.
I just want to know how it came about.
Thanks. |

| @fishy_fis From what I remeber it never got to boot due to the strange bios system that OS4 required. Pearpc did not support that bios system. _________________ A1200 ACA1232 128MB Indivison MkIICr Elbox empty Power Tower RPi3 Emulating C64 ZX Atari PS BBC Wii with Amiga emulation Vampire v4 SA |

os4 just need to be kickstart bootstrapped with all it components. ofter that kickstart made loading of modules and booting....
at the end what is need for make os4 booting and running
a first level boot loader. kickstart modules specific for the hardware .
this why is really simple emulate x5000 on qemu... only issue is qemu it self that have some bug in pci and irq foe ppce500 machine._________________ I love Amiga and new hope by AmigaNG A 500 + ; CDTV; CD32; PowerMac G5 Quad 8GB,SSD,SSHD,7800gtx,Radeon R5 230 2GB; MacBook Pro Retina I7 2.3ghz; #nomorea-eoninmyhome |

Haven't heard this one, but it's not beyond possibility. As they said above, it all starts with a booting sequence. Once you have that, a lot of stuff will run to some extent.

This is the first I've heard of this. I'm aware of Moana which ran on real PPC hardware. But not of a PPC emulator that could run OS4.1. |

What, UBoot? There is also SmartFirmware which is like OpenFirmware.

Because it only emulated OpenFirmware? I've seen this before. Most PPC emulators don't exactly emulate a PPC but a PPC Mac. A true PPC emulator should be able to accept a plugin for different firmware.
The Pegasos would be more simple to emulate since SmartFirmware has OpenFirmware features. And CFE as well. Both these use an OF style FLB/SLB.
OTOH, if OS4 is patched to run, then likely the OF loader would be used to boot. So it can boot from an actual OF enviroment. |

| I'm not talking about Moana on standard pearpc. I'm talking about the hacked os4 that runs on a tweaked pearpc. Its only turned up recently and isn't easy to find, but any more experienced internet user will find it easily enough (not on the web or any torrent, but easily found if a person uses a resource typically used for finding uncommon stuff (won't say more)).
It's an interesting curiousity, even if I have no interest in using it. Last edited by fishy_fis on 24-Dec-2017 at 04:14 PM.

But I knew that version of SmartFirmware present in Pegasos machines is closed source... Last edited by Raffaele on 24-Dec-2017 at 09:41 PM. Last edited by Raffaele on 24-Dec-2017 at 09:40 PM.

I know we've had disagreements in the past, so do't take this as condescending, but did you actually read my 1st post?
You've nearly covered everything I specifically asked people not to cover. It's all very, very obvious stuff that needn't even be said. Im interested in the details that aren't common knowledge |

Never heard about this one. By 2006 Adam Kowalzyc claimed OS4 runs in QEMU, but that is another case.
It seems you have access to this PearPC/OS4 version, has it any advantages over current QEMU/WinUAE? |

Even if closed source, they managed to write a Kickstart loader for it, so looks like the API at least must be public. Or the API/ABI is compatible to a OpenFirmware binary so all they needed to do was write an OF program. I'd like to know. I cant find any info on actually writing an OF loader. |
