| Starting to get myself ready for an A1222, and that means I need to choose a graphics card.
Looking at Warp 3D Nova on wiki.amiga.org it seems like the best available card is the R9 280X, but there’s not a lot of detail beyond that.
Should any of the OEM R9 280/280X cards work?
Is there any point going for the fastest possible card? Or would any of the R9 cards run at about this same speed?
Thanks for your advice! |

The fastest possible, offcourse :) but the fastest cards will problably not impress the A1222 cpu, it is overkill. Although the release of Warp3D Nova with support for UltraHD resolution can change this.

The 270 and 270X are the fastest cards on OS4 since they have higher core clock speeds and the current drivers and software don't take advantage of all the additional processing units on the 280 variants.
I think some of the R7 250 cards clock in around 1000Mhz and will therefore be faster on OS4 than a 280 at lower clock speed. When looking at core clock always look at the base clock because there are no overclocking or profiling options in OS4.
e.g. My MSI R9 280 has base clock of 933Mhz and the gaming mode and OC mode with clocks of 972Mhz and 1000Mhz can be ignored when selecting a card for OS4. If it is not clear whether a retailer is quoting the base clock or not you can check the manufacturers site.
It's also worth checking the compatibility page on Hans' site before selecting a card.
Link.
Hans is also working on adding support for RX cards in his RadeonHD V.3 driver which may be ready by the time Tabor is released so it's not essential to get a card right now before stocks of existing R5, R7 and R9 cards completely disappear from stores.Last edited by Rob on 29-Dec-2017 at 04:38 PM.

I got an ASUS R9 280X in my X5000 and it works great with Warp3d Nova
Edit: But as soon the new Radeon drivers are released I'm goin for a Radeon RX 480! Remember when I had to hunt down obsolete parts for my AmigaOne XE. Last edited by khayoz on 30-Dec-2017 at 01:42 AM.

here I run ReactionQuake3, AmigaOne X5000, Sapphire R9 280X on AmigaOS 4.1 FE with Warp3D gfx settings medium and resolution 1280x1024. https://m.youtube.com/watch?t=29s&v=CiI8ArFBnEk
Warp3D nova is another story.. havent seen any fps shooter on W3DN yet. but how this game with warp3d and this gfx card will run on A1222 Im clueless. The 270 and 270X are the fastest cards on OS4 since they have higher core clock speeds and the current drivers and software don't take advantage of all the additional processing units on the 280 variants. |
GPU performance is more nuanced than that. The OS4 drivers DO use all available shader units on supported cards (incl. on the 280/280X). However, the 270 and 280 have the same number of Render Output Units (ROU), so you'll find that the card with the highest clock wins in simple operations (like those in GfxBench2D). The ROUs become the bottleneck.
The 280/280X should have an advantage when complex shaders are used, because it has more shader units. We'll have to wait and see what actual performance is, because we have very few Warp3D Nova/OpenGL ES2 titles yet (and no GfxBench3D or similar).

That's true for the boost clock. However, if a card has a factory overclocked base speed, then it will run overclocked.

I'm working on Polaris cards (so a subset of RX cards), and it'll be a separate driver.

| Thanks everyone that replied, including Hans :)
It seems like it's too complex a question to have a simple answer, so I guess I'll just wait until A1222 is available and see where the driver situation is, and make a choice then! |
