qemu vs MOL

Hello Everyone,

I installed qemu and ran Mac OS9. From what I read Mac-on-Linux is faster. Compiling MOL requires the kernel source which seems to be missing from my system. Still, someone must have installed it. Could someone tell me how they were able to get MOL, or qemu with kvm working?

Thanks,
Al

@Al89

mol kvm dont work on x5000 because the different cpu type x5000 is book3e, apples are book3s.
same thing is for qemu no kvm only tgc. you can try with sheepshaver but direct dont work because you need to fix pthread calls in the sheepshever sources.

@tlosm

Is there anything else that can improve performance with qemu emulation of a mac?

@Al89

only fast host cpu make the difference in this case.
you are emulating and no virtualizing.

example:
qemu mac99 gave 18 points of cpu benchmarking in speedometer on X5000/40
qemu mac99 gave 22 points of cpu benchmarking in speedometer on G5 quad

qemu mac99 gave 41 points on i7 . same points i have on kvm qemu on g5 running tiger with classic with G4 cpu paravirtualized
Sheepshaver on G5 gave 95 points same as in tiger with classic in no emulation.

@Al89

You should be able to compile it from using the kernel headers. Of course these may be hard to come by. You could have some fun and install generic kernal-headers from Synaptic.

@Hypex

but dont work. is only loose time

e5500 like P1022 are Book3e
604 to G5 and Powers are Book3s

I asked to qemu devs and to linux ppc kernel dev in past no kvm in this case

e5500 like P1022 are compatible with 601 instructions sets that is the generic

Do you have any ideas on where I could get the kernel source?

Actual OSX versions might not run because of the different CPU used by Apple nowadays.

@OneTimer1

It looks like I have one person telling me it won't work and 2 telling me it will.

I decided to give it a try.

I went to amigalinux.org and download the MOL deb package. It installed no problem. MOL let me do the setup and will run until it needs an OS (not very long). I never use MOL before, so I need to learn how to set it up. Any help would greatly be appreciated.

think this the only one person who say that mol dont work on x5000 like other book3e is the only one who had two x5000.
you wanna be sure without loose your time?
try
qemu-system-ppc -M mac99 -cpu G3 --enable-kvm
please copy here what qemu will write inside the console after running.

if it will work i m not right but im sure im right.

@xeno74

It would be impossible to test where it will work or not.

root@ubuntu:~# modprobe kvm-pr
modprobe: FATAL: Module kvm-pr not found in directory /lib/modules/4.14.0-X5000-jm

I would need this module. It is not looking good for Mac-on-Linux.

Could someone tell me the differences between "PR" KVM and KVM?

I can't use --enable-kvm, because qemu was built without kvm support.

Also, I am missing KVM-PR. Without that MOL has no hope of working. When you did your testing on the X5000 did you have a that kernel module?

It is not that I don't believe you. I just don't want to give up!

@Al89

kvm-pr is the opportunity to simulate another cpu class. example g5 become a g4 or a g3 or a power8.
build qemu from source with kvm support. but usually the distros pakages are all with kvm enabled...
i build all my kernels with virtualization support ask the a-eon team to share one of my kernels. 4.11 x5000 was mine build.
