Help!!!

I bought last week a nice Amiga 1200 with OS 3.9 pre-installed with tonnes of games/aps/utilities on a 8GB flashcard with turbo card (no idea which one) with 128mb mem on it + Indivision MKII, and am really happy with it.

Now I bought a PCMCI CDROM player (TELMex) to make it more complete, and somehow it didn't work (plug play) (doesn't see the drive), so I read some forums and took some advise to install the IDEfix97 software to let it recognise it.

So I (as a noob) did dubbelclick the install icon, press novice install, click proceed, then it showed the path "system" where all my system files are, and proceed. Then it mentioned, if while install the the AMiga woot reboot or something, i should do the install again or something like that. Anyways, it hanged straight away at 0%. and after a few minutes no reaction, i turned off the amiga, and turned it on again, and I got a black screen where it stays that way.

I thought "PLEASE God nooo!!! So I took my workbench 3.1 disk and put it in, and thank God it booted workbench 3.1, and still saw all the hdd folders and saw the 130 other RAM and 2 MB Chip Memory.

So after I consulted somebody about what to do, he said, de-install IDEfix97 which may fix your issue, but I had no Idea how because it couldn't find "installer", after some search I copied the installer from c to ram and was able to uninstall IDEfix97. After that I rebooted, same issue!!

So I started to search and black screen could also mean, that the turocard is the issue. So I check the diagnostics (3rd option in bootmenu), but it does not find the card. I am not sure if that was the case all the time already, but it isn't there, but it does recognise the memory (130 MB). So I am not sure. Anyways, it has to do something with the install. Maybe a simple settings? I have no clue, I am a noob in this :P Please Help!!

Try booting it with out the card. It will most likely not boot all the way due lack of memory. But if you dont get a black screen least your know where to look. Also make sure there is nothing in WBStartup folder related to idefix97 and also look in devs dos drivers for CD0 or CD1 and remove it. Check both S: startup-sequence and user-startup as well.

@g01df1sh

Ok, I will check without the card. (will let you know) when I am back from work

"Also make sure there is nothing in WBStartup folder related to idefix97 and also look in devs dos drivers for CD0 or CD1 and remove it. "

I did already (remove CD0) but had no use, but I don't know what other thing should be removed in the DEV DOS folder... don't know what is new comparing before.

"Check both S: startup-sequence and user-startup as well."
I have no clue how and what it should say, can you help me with that?
As mentioned, I am a noob, so please a step by step plan what to do ;) Thanks really appreciated the support.

I'd boot the WB3,1 from disk and open s/ startup-sequence with ed or any text editor (sys: utilities) and see if there is a line about idefix at the beginning and uncomment it with ; in the beginning of the line or remove it.

Maybe the idefix is looking for the actual hardware from the motherboard?

Tell here what does it say or in user-startup. Somebody will help for sure.

@PR
Thanks so much for the reply, I will take a look and post back. what I see tonight (= in 8 hours or so).

I myself too think something is in that startup sequence which is messing it up. Still wierd, the turbocard is not recognised in diagnostics, but does shows the full memory in workbench.

I ran into this as well (black screen on boot and nothing happens anymore), and basically in my case the following is the cause:

Quote:
OS 3.9 Boing Bag 2 issue Scsi.device v43.43 from OS 3.9 Boing Bag 2 attempts to support 48bit LBA addressing required for drives larger than 128GiB. Unfortunately it was not implemented correctly in v43.43, and only later fixed by Toni Wilen in v43.45. OS3.9 BB2 uses its buggy LBA48 code with any drive above 4GiB that reports LBA48 capability, and will guru immediately after BB2 setpatch has rebooted the system. If you have such a drive/card and want to use OS3.9 BB2, the solution is to skip the scsi.device rom update from BB2. There are at least two ways to achieve this: 1 Loading a newer version of scsi.device (43.45) with LoadModule >NIL: DEVS:scsi.device NOREBOOT and Setpatch SKIPROMUPDATES "scsi.device" QUIET 2 Using maprom feature or an actual EPROM to load a custom 3.9 ROM with a newer scsi.device and SetPatch NOROMUPDATE QUIET

Taken from http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=61666

So first thing to check, before you go do the loadmodule thing is this.

When turning on the Amiga press both mouse buttons, boot without startup sequence and ed s:startup-sequence and change the setpatch line to
Setpatch SKIPROMUPDATES "scsi.device" QUIET

Of your system boots with this, you may consider to also add the better scsi.device with loadmodule.

@spud101

ok, in noob language:
1. so I go left rightbutton and go to boot menu
2. select to boot without startup sequence
3. then I get a "1>" (I remember)
4. I type: " ed s:startup-sequence"
5. Then change the setpatch line to: "Setpatch SKIPROMUPDATES "scsi.device" QUIET"

is that correct?

Yes!

The only thing I'm not sure if there is an assign for S when booting without a startup-sequence. So just to make sure

Make step 4 into:
- cd s
- ed startup-sequence

@Paulthetall

Wait. You read to install IDEFix for a PCMCIA drive? That doesn't make sense! IDEFix is for the internal IDE port. PCMCIA is a seperate interface! That sounds like stupid advice.

Is this TELMex CDROM an Amiga compatible drive?

If you notice in your first shot it checks if C:IDEFix is present. So check that and remove the file from that location if it is still in your C: directory.

Next it sets a SCSIUpdate variable. You can change that 1 to 0. Or set the enviroment variable NOSCSIUPDATE. This is cleaner than hacking the standard OS3.9 Startup-Sequence. The following will disable it that way from the shell:
SetENV SAVE NOSCSIUPDATE 1

Also to save typing in the boot shell I do a "ed x". The "x" doesn't really matter as it's just a file that doesn't exist in this case. Now use the menu to open up Startup-Sequence. Done!

Finally once your system is booting again run PrepCard from Tools to see if it picks up the drive. Should give you info on the PCMCIA slot. For starters.

@Paulthetall

YES!!!!!!! I only deleted the IDEfix from the C: and rebooted and it launches again as normal :D

Haven't done the other commandos yet:
"Next it sets a SCSIUpdate variable. You can change that 1 to 0. Or set the enviroment variable NOSCSIUPDATE. This is cleaner than hacking the standard OS3.9 Startup-Sequence. The following will disable it that way from the shell:
SetENV SAVE NOSCSIUPDATE 1

Is that still required?

What to do next to make the Telmex work and also to have a clean start:

Video of boot to workbench with errors

when checking video itself it says: "LoadMonDrvs:File is not executable."

@Paulthetall

You shouldn't try to fix something that isn't broken. If you remove scsi.device from the ROM update, your 8GB card might stop working.

IDEfix (the package, not the program) is not only for IDE devices. It also contains drivers for various other CD devices, among other the telmexatapi.device which you might need to operate your CD drive.

You should not install IDEfix again, but you could use (manually copy) components of the package to make your CD drive work.

Okido

Only 2 things left:

1. Ok, but the startup as video shows is not normal, and needs to boot normal
2. Telmex CD-Rom still needs to work... is not recognising the CD's

@Paulthetall

LoadMonDrvs not executable -> this is very odd. Hopefully it's only the executable flag missing and not something more serious like a virus.

Open a Shell window and enter the command

protect c:loadmondrvs rwed

then try again.

The "close all windows" requester will disappear once there LoadMonDrv message is gone.

For the CD drive copy telmexatapi.device from the IDEfix package into the Devs drawer.

Then make a text file called CD0 in Devs/DosDrivers with this contents:

/***************************************************************/
/* CacheCDFS mountlist entry © 2000 Amiga Inc. */
/***************************************************************/
FileSystem = L:CacheCDFS /* The name of the game */

Your first commando didn't change anything. To see the startup seqeance file see earlier post for the info.

Looks like the telmex device was already in the device folder, but no Cd0 in dosdriver.

Text I typed over.

I typed it over but when i doubleclick it, (CD0) it says "Controll Entry in mountlist missing" while it is filled in.

any idea?

Well I get a PCMCI wireless kit from amikit.com in a few days, so I hope to do the copy paste with internet in a few days for the telmex driver.

Now only the startup error notifications, who can help me out and what do you want to know to solve the issue? Thanks in advance guys!

Only if you need to edit that file again. Can also do on Workbench but it's generally easier to have icons in front of you.

This may be a bad monitor driver. Check Devs/Montors directory off the Workbench for a bad file. As in one that doesn't execute.
