Like I wrote, I'm willing to bet that the SMP will be coming eventually. Read the whole message.

Count me in with you guys. I agree, and I expect to puchase the next AmigaOne models, and I don’t care that they arrive late.

I'm really eager to buy an amigaos machine and try it out. I'll probably buy one next year, let's see if there will be a new x5000 by then.

Anyway, I'm, mostly, a linux user and I'm quite interested on this "odd" system, personally, the only things that I do care about are Office (Libreoffice or other, f*ck ms stuff), retrogaming and podcasts. What do you guys use to read PDFs and write documents?

BTW, I'm not sure when the amigaos 4.2 will be released, but it definitely won't be an epic fail like windows 10 at least :P ,nevertheless, I'm looking forward to it!

@paulombsd

Welcome to the nut-house!

People have been working in the background for some years now on LibreOffice, but it's a humungous undertaking and it's not in a state to be released yet. There are spreadsheets such as the old TurboCalc and the newer Ignition, and WP editors like AbiWord running under Linux emulation. but not much more.

For reading PDFs, there is "AmiPDF", which is old, slow and can't print, but it works to display most PDFs. It badly needs to be updated for modern standards.

There may or may not be an "AmigaOS 4.2", but there will certainly be an OS update released one day under some name or other. It may be 4.1 Update 7, 8, 4.2, or 5.0. The name is unimportant. I can't predict what will and won't be in it, but it will contain enough new "stuff" that people will be prepared to pay for it.

There is so much hardware available these days, thanks to ACube and A-Eon, that you should be able to find a second-hand NG machine if you don't want to wait. We are beta-testing the "Cyrus" X5000/020, /040 and "Tabor" A1222 these days.

For PDF, there is VPDF. Really fast and compatible. Much better than AmiPDF.

@tonyw

I know how LibreOffice is a huge pile of stuff like java, C++, their graphical toolkit also knowns as VCL...
Anyway, I live in Brazil for now, so, the best I can get is a powermac and boot MorphOS or AROS on it :(

Anyhow, I'll move to England later this year and, hopefully, I'll be able to get a decent machine for AmigaOS there :)

@pseudaxos

Thanks for the tip

@Fl@sh

After all these years AmigaOS is so far behind that 4.2 or any other version doesn't matter any more. Eventually the current users will go to that big computer store in the sky and that will be the end of it.

It's hard to justify AmigaOne prices when compared to Talos POWER9 boards. But it also hard to justify POWER9 AmigaOnes when you cannot take full advantage of the hardware.

Still, this(or similar) board would be a much better high end model than things like X1000/X5000.
But it all falls down in the end because of Hyperion, no matter which HW you choose.

Which as we all know moves glacially slow, or you'd have Tabor in your hands by now.

I do expect to see SMP under OS4, but there might be no vendors left selling PPCs by then, so Power 9 does make sense.

Especially consider a single Power 9 thread is about three times more powerful than a P50XX thread, and that the two core X5000/20 only supports 2 concurrent threads, the four core X5000/40 would only support four concurrent threads....

And the Talos II Lite with the cheapest four core Power 9 cpu would support SIXTEEN concurrent threads.

Actually, I think that it does makes a lot of sense, I mean, you can run a "modern OS" like debian on top of it and dual boot it with AmigaOS for your retrogaming needs and other stuff.
It's not really what I would want, but it would for me at the very least...

@paulombsd

Then again you have WinUAE (and derivates) and by the speed the AmigaOS hardware and software develops, WinUAE will be mature enough for anyone to use it for their retrogaming needs and other stuff.

How do mean Tony? It does print, it has a Print button on top. I pressed it today. It was able to print. Of course, it takes ages to do whatever Ghostscript is doing, rendering a bitmap at 600 DPI in my case no doubt, but it gets there in the end.

Infact I used it today to print a webpage output from Odyssey. Bit of a work around, but Odyssey can't print directly to a printer and only sends it as PS to a DOS device. So exported as PDF and printed from AmiPDF.

Well, actually, he could have had a Tabor over two years ago, any of us could. By signing up to be part of the beta testing team. Can even get a discount sometimes.

Interesting option if you're interested in exploring the P1022.

Discount or not, I'd rather spend the extra money and buy an X5000, with OS4 and MorphOS support already available.
