Whatever happened to PIOS? I seem to have missed out what happened here (possibly because of my four year absence)

it went the same way that everything
David Haynie has been involved in...
(chapter 11, konkurs, bancruptcy...).

let's see where dear DH has been
Commodore - bancrupt
Pios - bancrupt
VisCorp - bancrupt (but I think CEO Bill Buck is the reason there, at least according to Carl Sassenrath)

perhaps the Amiga curse is a DH curse.

PIOS became Met@Box a few years ago and had to ditch the PowerPC clone arena after Apple screwed the market over. They went into STBs and PowerMac accelerator cards, seemed to be making good progress, announced some Amiga PowerPC cards and then things started to go pear shaped.

I actually had money in the bank stashed away for the PIOS One which sat there until recently when I used it for the AmigaOne. Dedication, optimism or stupidity? You decide

How about good planning. Wish I had done something like that.

Here's what was said about the PIOS One:
Quote:

Googlism for: the pios one

the pios one is an approach to offer here at least a lower entry level
the pios one is prepared for all future technologies
the pios one is a single motherboard
the pios one is using pci technologies or not
the pios one is also discussed on usenet
the pios one is maybe able to work in this format
the pios one is entering the scene as a computer which provides newest technology with up
the pios one is designed to rock as a beos workstation
the pios one is a way cool idea
the pios one is still the fun project
the pios one is targetted at anyone who won't figure out for themselves they want this machine

Okay - now its the turn of the BoXeR!?!

@MetalJoe

Yes, thread necromancy once again...

PIOS became Met@Box

I previously posted a link I discovered a week or two ago:

http://moonmedia.vn/index.php/en/products/met-box

Note the spelling "Met@box", despite the page saying "met-box"

Perhaps this will be a bit more clear then:

More to come in due course.

Funnily enough I found an old cu amiga at my parents place last night. It had an article on the pios. It also had an insert about the amiga being bought by gateway. The news arrived after the mag had hit the printers.... The insert, not stapled, was still in the magazine after all these years. I read most of the magazine. Quite Nostalgic.

(In addition to the discussion interspersed here)

[EDIT - miscounted by a day)

The 'zero hour' of that countdown has me intrigued.
In Rotterdam time the countdown terminates (nominally) at 2pm. If the countdown has accounted for the clock change of daylight savings time, it terminates at 1pm Rotterdam time (Saturday 1 November). Both seem 'odd' times of day for a countdown to some form of commercial relaunch.

Vietnam also doesn't fit the bill, being +6 hours relative to Rotterdam.

The one time zone which might fit, assuming daylight savings time has been accounted for in the countdown, is New Zealand (+11 hours relative to Rotterdam): In Auckland/Wellington, this countdown terminates at Midnight on Saturday.

@Boot_WB

Are you working on some kind of conspiracy theory here? (evil grin)

Heh, who needs conspiracy theories when the world is full of conspiracy anyway.
/world-weary cynicism

Not at all, and in retrospect Midnight on Saturday/Sunday doesn't seem like a likely zero hour either. I do wonder why they chose 1pm Saturday though - it just seems rather an odd time/day for a launch to attract any media attention.

@Boot_WB

Well i did the same calculations and i think it's one PM or 13 hours also.
Doesn't seem a weird time just after lunch.

However when you check the page source the time seems to be hardcoded
as 13 hour against UTC/GMT which would make it 1 hour later for Rotterdam ?
But thats probably wrong, as its now 14:00 hours here and the site says the event
is in exactly 65 days .. subtract an hour for daylight savings and you are
at 13:00 hours again.

But if you check the cymtv site for its twitter stream then it shows watches with the
event. Probably metawatches. As metawatch is a company that makes watches
for use with iphones and android phones i think.
What if metawatch want to make some box for use with watches at home, and call it perhaps
something like metabox ?
Then have a company like cymtv help with putting their P2P video protocol and channel
collection on it. And perhaps have a company that does things like internet television
to sell and market it .. perhaps like cymtv.

CYMTV confirms 2015 NAB show presence

Quote:
In addition, CYMTV will demo several products of some of their partners, such as the Watzon.TV service, the MoonDog OTT streaming monitoring product and the consumer electronics products by Germany-based met@box.

Looks like the new met@box is an Android settopbox with P2p streaming and an amiga emulator.

@Lazlo_Hollyfeld

Facebook page lists all the shows (post NAB) that met@box will appear.

Hmmm...I not so sure this topic needs to be consigned to the back pages of AW.

If a moderator happens to notice, perhaps this could be moved to general chat or general technology.

Seems you can actually get a google hit for metabox now.
