Hi everybody,

I already posted this on the OS4 ML (yahoogroups) but I thought I post it here aswel....

After installing the OS4 update, it seems that sometimes after resetting
(warm or cold) the screen is still mangled like it was with the 'Radeon
bug' in the first release.

Am I the only one having noticed this ? Shouldn't have this been fixed ?

Anyway, I have a A1 G4 @ 800 Mhz, Radeon 7000 and tried the normal update
aswel as a fresh install !

Cheers, hope someone can help.

Martin

@lizardrock
I noticed (and already reported) a screen corruption bug when using 8 bit screen modes even with the latest and greatest Radeon driver. Using non-8bit modes cured the problem on my Radeon 7000 here.

@ssolie

The problem occurs on 16 and 32 bit screens, both 1024x768 and 800x600 resolutions.

So I'm stuck....

@lizardrock

No problems here either with ATI Radeon 8500. In fact, the emergency boot screen (both buttons down at reboot) now displays perfectly.

Same gfx here; PowerColor model. No radeon bug found here. Did your OS4-pre
work well before the update or was it acting up then?

@Snuffy

I had the 'problem' sometimes after a warm reboot with the pre-release.
Now I have it almost everytime after a warm boot, and sometimes after a cold boot.
Also it seems te be more mangled then before, but that could be my imagination :)

I tried eliminating possible causes by disabling wbstartup, choosing other screenmodes (line 640x480, 8 bit 16 bit etc) but nothing helped.

Oh, the stripes and colors move / change when I have moving things on my screen like a mouse pointer or an animdock.....

I tried to grab a mangled sreen but sgrab spits out an even more mangled one, a totally corrupted grab....

Could it be the radeon itself ?

Cheers,

Martin

@lizardrock

You did update your U-Boot right?

We are also aware of a few reported incidents of people needing to apply more cooling to their Radeon.

@Hyperionmp

Yes, I did flash the new U-boot. It says at the Uboot prompt screen thingy version 1.1.1, so I guess every went well.

Do you really think it could be cooling of the radeon ? Did the other people who had cooling problems also have these problems I discribed ?

I'll check how hot it is right now....

Ok, I just did and it doesn't even seem handwarm.

Thanks,

Martin

I've got a Radeon 7000 as well and (nearly) no problems:
Only when clicking on the screen-flipping gadget (and there is no other screen opened) the picture gets unstable for about a quarter of a second. That's all - everything else is just fine and I would not really call that a problem.

I made a picture with my digital camera, do you want to see it ?
Maybe this helps....

I switched my Radeon for another Radeon 7000 and now the problem is gone !
My 'old' radeon gives the same problems on another A1, so thats it then !

Thanks,

Martin

@Metalheart

It appears this "bug" might have resurfaced again. I have a Radeon7000VE and
since some time after update3 it has started displaying currupt graphics
using AmigaOS4 (but not, it appears, in Linux with XFree86-4.3.0).

Since the problems have appeared after Update3 and seem to have become
worse over time, a hardware fault seems probable.

Symptoms are:

1) UBoot display looks fine, but the Workbench screen is corrupted.
(screenshot) Changing screenmode does not clear the corruption.

2) Workbench looks ok, but after some seemingly random amount of time
the display gets corrupted during a graphics operation (e.g. moving a window).
The time appears to be random from 10h.

3) Any application attempting to use 3D support (e.g. the glmatrix screensaver)
immediately causes severe corruption (29 times out of 30).

4) A reboot (Ctrl+Amiga+Amiga) will not clear the corruption.

5) A reuboot (Ctrl+Alt+Alt) will sometimes (rarely) clear the corruption, it will
otherwise display a corrupted uboot screen.

6) Booting Debian GNU/Linux appears not to cause corruption, but if the display
is already bad (as per 5, above) the errors will persist and the screen will be
unreadable.

Discarded solutions:

Reseating the graphics card does not solve the problem.
Cooling the graphics card does not yield any effect.
Using the radeon driver from Update1 does not fix the problem.

As I wrote earlier, I believe this to be a hardware problem and I will
attempt (soon-ish next week or so) to test with another graphics card.

The odd thing is that XFree86-4.3.0 does not seem to suffer from
these problems, so I thought I would post this in case anyone has
any other suggestions or wants to ask questions.

Is it possible that card is bad? I have a PowerColor Radeaon 7000. PCIscan:

-- 12 0x1002 0x5159 ATI Technologies RV100 Radeon 7000 / Radeon VE

Ocassionaly some weird things, but that's rare; 99% perfect.

@Tesla

Hi,

As long as you are looking into Radeon, please read the last page or two of this thread:
http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?mode=viewtopic&topic_id=13841&forum=14&start=20&viewmode=flat&order=0

Anything pertinent here, or is this totally unrelated?

Edit(Added):Just looked at your .png file

@Snuffy
Sure looks like a problem with the card. Not a problem related directly to what
is discussed in my link above.

Best Wishes,
#6

@Tesla

that screenshot looks alot like one of my radeon 7500AGP cards , the problem is that my card gets hot and starts vibrating and then the picture gets like yours i tried to move my card abit (near the rear of the agp bus) and the picture got fine again....for a little while.

i threw my card in the thrash since i got an 7500PCI and another 7500AGP and both thoose work fine (and has same adreess/info).

@Tesla

Your screenshot looks nothing like my screen when the problem occured, altough it still could be a hardware fault. I'd recommende to try another radeon or two.... And try your card in atleast one other computer (no OS4 !!)

If they are all allright, it could be a software fault.

My card gave also corruption on a PC with Windows and a Peg...

Good luck

Martin

Yes, I tried the INTERRUPT tooltype for the radeon monitor driver too. No effect.

The only odd thing is that X11 (XFree86-4.3.0) does not seem to be affected in the same
way. Oh well, a new card seems to be in order.

@Metalheart

I described a problem with single-pixel-wide horizonital trashing here in a
Forum some time ago. I sent screen shots to Josh and he told me that the
problem was in the driver and had been fixed.. I'd get it in the next update.

Since installing update3 the problem remains, though it's not quite as bad.
I'm running the "stock" Radeon 7000 chip in a Micro-AOne board, so "throwing
the bad radeon away" is not an option. I'm running in a well cooled full size
case, with a good clean power supply (Antec).

The picture shown before in this forum is a LOT worse than what I have, I don't
think it's the same problem.
