| Taken from Hardmac.com show report,
Quote:
New product: Mac mini Slot In combo, Ethernet, DVI/VGA, USB2, firewire. it is amazingly small!! around 60% the height of an iPod mini!! it is a BYOKM : Bring Your Own Keyboard and Mouse (NDLR: un Cube killer ?)
It will be shipped with iLife 05 and Panther January 22nd (G4 processor): 499$ for 256Mo, 40Go, 1.25 GHz 599$ for 256Mo, 80Go, 1.42 GHz |
(I'd personally rather have the super drive than extra 170MHz.)
(any pictures would be nice.)
(@Eyetech, that's where all the G4's have gone! )
also from show, Tiger demo crashes
I know this is a Amiga forum but I see the Mac as distant cousin of the Amiga and both have decent operating systems and processors.
Sort of the Mac's answer to a modern day A1200 (but without the expandability).

Mac mini
"Encased in brushed metal, the new Mac mini features a square shape with rounded edges and is somewhat similar in appearance to an Apple AC power adapter. It features a slot-loading CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo drive, USB 2.0, FireWire 400, DVI and VGA connectivity and a headphone jack.
Jobs describes the Mac mini and BYODKM: Bring Your Own Display, Keyboard and Mouse. The Mac mini works just fine with Apple's peripherals, of course, or you can use other industry-standard peripherals.
The Mac mini comes in two models -- a 1.25GHz, 40GB G4 system for $499 and an 80GB 1.42GHz G4 system for $599. Both are coming on January 22, 2005. "
sounds overpriced and should have been shown at CES and taken on Gates crap IMHO

Nice machine and specs, but IMO it's DROP DEAD UGLY. Ugh! *shudder*. Looks like a tissue box
Why can't apple designers come up with a nicer case? _________________ Seriously, if you want to contact me do not bother sending me a PM here. Write me a mail |

MacMini on the UK Apple site (because it took me ages to find, and I know that you're all lazy layabouts )
339 GBP? This is where having a credit card becomes very, very dangerous...
(Edit: Phew - I'm safe; the Apple UK store appears to be borked - in Firefox, Opera and IE... oh well, their loss I suppose...)
@Rogue
Ugly? Well, it isn't attractive but there's not much you can do with a computer. At least with this one, you can put your mouse mat on top of it - saving even more desk space Last edited by Chunder on 11-Jan-2005 at 08:22 PM.

I agree, it's not exactly a marvel of design. But it's a good machine. The specs are rather better than I'd expected, particularly the Radeon 9200. That's a fairly capable chip, and faster then the GeForce 5200 they put in the iMac G5.
Wonder when they'll reach the UK. I'm very tempted.

What do you say to someone who thinks $499 for a computer is overpriced? I'm guessing you'll never own an A1 then? |

Looks Nice dont it? 1. will be 'old hat' as soon as you get one, 2. Not Upgradeable (no PCI/AGP) 3. Not an Amiga! 4. Its a MAC!
Well, horses for courses i suppose..

Probably the profit is to come from snap-on cases that they will sell separatly later.
With current design it's really uggly. |

Well when my old AMD 450Mhz Windows 98 PC gives up I think I'll move over to this as a machine for a general home machine (Word Processing / Web Browsing etc). (It won't replace OS4 and my A1 of course!)
The price is right and it's nice and small. I think Apple might just have a winner here, especially with all those getting fed up with Windoze.
Cheers, Bean.

| I don't know whether to be pleased or disappointed.
As a Mac, it's a fantastic little thing. Price, size, features all look good to me. It's the first Mac sold without a 1-button mouse, which is more significant than selling a Mac without a mouse at all in a way. It's pretty minimalist, aesthetically, but due to its size it probably looks better in the flesh. Even the 'Flower Power' iMac didn't look too bad in real life. It's not the fastest machine in the world, but I'm happily typing this on a Powerbook G4/500 so that's not a concern.
As a post-iPod assault on the living room, it seems like a huge missed opportunity to me. I really wanted TV out, a remote control and some kind of Tivo-like capabilities.
It doesn't sound a lot, but I think it would have been something of a sensation. I think this thing will sell quicker than Apple can build it, but what Apple product doesn't!

Nope I like it's looks too. Simple, clean, elegant. Beats hell out the current trend in giant neon 'tard bait. |

Have a look on the main page, there is a lead which allows you to connect it to a TV.

Should have an interesting effect on Freescale's profit margins, because I'm convinced this thing is going to sell like wildfire. I hope they've got a few million of them piled up somewhere, or there's going to be shortages very quickly._________________ Who do you serve, and who do you trust? - Galen |
