Hi,

can somebody give me a start how to install Debian Linux on a SAM (just Debian - not a dual boot system).
Do I just download the 166MB net-install ISO burn it to CD an chuck it in, or do I need something else (besides the ethernet cable connected to my DSL-Router) ?
Hints are very wellcome, as forwarded in another thread, I hope to receive my SAM by the end of the week...

greetings
gerograph

I recon the Sam Debian install cd is like any other installer for Debian.
As long as it boots you to the stage where you can select the install method, it does it's job.

In my experience after you have selected the netinstall option, and it has found the servers for apt, the Debian install is pretty much straight forward on any system, so from that point you can just follow standard Debian install guides.

So, straight forward... even for a LINUX fool like me ?? That would be cool...
Any more hints ??

Well, straigh forward meaning you can follow guides like this: http://www.debian.org/releases/stable/installmanual.

Regarding hints, do plan the way your will partition the harddrive carefully.

well, I am just trying to install Linux (Debian) on my SAM.
After choosing Language, the Installer say he cannot find a Linux-Kernel Modul ??
I just downloaded the Iso file from Acube unpacked it, burned it to cd and boot from CD. Did I miss something ??

@gerograph

When install says that it cannot find the kernel, just reply that it can continue without it, the installation is done like that :)

And yes, you must have your Sam connected to Internet in order to be able to finish the complete installation ;)

See you later ;)

See you later ??? Does this mean, you are suggesting I will run in trouble again...
no just joking... lets wait and see, at the moment linux comes with a second reminder: "cannot find installable Kernel in one of the ATP Sources"... (I installed in german, so this messages is just translated and not the original ...). I will continue without installing a Kernel (yes)...

O.k. I just ran through the installation Procedure after SAM downloaded 890 files and did install them I got a message saying:

Could not install bootloader ? You have to start manually ....

What the heck does that mean ? After restarting SAM U-Boot says:

No known boot method for device type 128 ???

In Uboot preferences under "boot sequence" I entered under "Boot arguments for Linux: root=/dev/sda3"

Somebody an Idea ?

Ok, so, your installation is all finished at this point ;)

For now, you have 3 solutions for booting Debian and overall installing the bootloader on the harddisk.

1st) Start the Sam board with the Debian CD again.
When you come at the first screen, press Alt + F2 in order to launch a terminal window.
After that, type the following command :
cd cdrom (enter)
cd sam440ep (enter)
./parthenope-install (enter) -- don't forget the '.' and the '/' before the 'parthenope-install', it's very important !
It will then write the bootloader on your harddisk.
And after that, type the following command :
reboot (enter)

Please shut-down completely the Sam board after that and remove the power supply cable since with some optical devices we have noticied that the otical drive is locked after the command 'reboot' !

For U-Boot preferences, if your boot partition for Debian is the 3rd one, ok, sda3 is good, if it is another partition, type the right number of partition (sda1 if it is the first partition of the harddisk for example).

2nd) Start the Sam board with the Amiga OS 4.1 CD if you have it.
On workbench, launch Media Toolbox and choose your harddisk.
And after, use the Install RDB / Reinstall button.
Click on Install button after and choose the sam440ep/Parthenope file from your Debian cd.
Save the modifications and restart your Sam board.

3rd) This solution is more complicated because it needs a PC on your Lan with the WinAgents TFTP Server software installed on it.
I think it's not a good solution so I will not develop it ;)

Thanks, Laurent aka Faranheit

You can do that by editing /etc/X11/xorg.conf

It seems you will be interested by the news I just posted:
Quote:
Hello everyone,

Here is an article which describes how to run both Debian and AmigaOS 4.x on the same harddisk of a Sam440 system.

It explains step be step how to install Debian and how to use the Parthenope bootloader to load both operating systems.

Enjoy!

Linux on Sam440

Edit: it seems I'm a few hours late

@elwood

You are not really to late, thanks for the workshop/tutorial. My goal was to install Linux/AOS on one HD, in the meantime I decided to do it via 2 HD's. Anyway don't you need a new SLB for dual boot on one HD/SAM ? Did I miss something in the last hours ?

@all

at the moment I am still working on screen resolution, tried to edit Xorg.conf, but don't know where and what to add concernig screenresolution....

Thanx for help, I'll check elwoods homepage next, I was waiting for it, just checked yesterday evening the last time...

No, as I wrote on my page. You can do it with Parthenope.

@elwood

checked your page, thanx sounds great, I will give it a try later on... At the moment I still have a problem with SFS on Amiga. When I finally decided how to partition drive on Amigaside I will try Debian on one HD solution from you...

Thanx for the great effort... you help me a lot in achiving my goal of "not to switch on my windows machine"...

@all

figured out what to edit in the xorg.conf for screenresolution:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600"
EndSubSection
EndSection

See you then...
