Internet News   Internet News : Portable Amiga in the works, rumor mill starts churning
posted by Petah on 23-Oct-2011 9:23:43 (40373 reads)
Although not yet officially announced, a new and portable Amiga is getting prepared for launch. According to a statement made by a spokesperson of AmigaOS developer Hyperion Entertainment, the Amiga - for the moment referred to as a "netbook" computer - is already running AmigaOS in a yet-to-be-disclosed version.

Supposedly, the new netbook Amiga is will be "sourced in a special configuration from an OEM". The manufacturer in question is, just like the price tag, the launch date and the hardware specifications, currently unknown paving the way for further speculation and rumors. The netbook Amiga will set a mark in computer history as the first portable Amiga to see the light of the day since the Amiga 1000 was introduced to the US market in 1985.

My bet is on a 12" LimePC Z9:

http://www.limepc.com/z9.shtml

CPU: Freescape PowerPC 800Mhz MIPS (Ssolie mentioned an e300 core, could be the MPC5121e with PoverVR GPU?)
Memory: 256Mb DDR II (or 512Mb optional)
Storage: 4Gb (8Gb or 30Gb optional, support up to 32Gb)
Connectivity: WiFi 802.11 b/g, 3G support (optional)
Battery: Lithium-iron, 3400mAh
I/O: 1*RJ45, 2*USB2, 1*SD Reader, 1*VGA Output
Colors: White, Black, Pink, Yellow, Blue, Green
Dimensions: 252mm*172mm*32mm
Weight: 0,9Kg (including battery)

Whatever the configuration/processor: count me in for an AmigaOne laptop/netbook!

If it that one, with 800mhz and all the stuff you mention here, then it will be 5+.

Cool!
I'm sure I'll have some pocket change left after the X1000 purchase

Great news indeed!

Even 3D can`t be expected, finally there will be portable OS4 system,
and seems it will be cheapest.

Hope performance will be between Classic and SAM 440

@vox

5121e has PowerVR Lite GFX chip that supports 3D (however, drivers would be problem there).

5200B 400 MHz in Efika is half as fast as 440EP 666 MHz in SAM (integer operations) - roughly on the level of 250 MHz 604e. 5121e ("successor" of 5200B) has bigger L1 cache(s), so it could be even a little bit faster.

I think it could be fast enough for 1500 CPU cycles in DosBox (sufficient for games up to 1991/1992) or even Hatari.

For crying out loud, port AmigaOS to x86 already and be done with it... all of this 'hardware' wouldn't then be a problem! Imagine, triple booting your Mac Book Air with Windows 7, OSX Lion and AmigaOS 4.x... your userbase, and sales of OS4 would increase ten-fold!

Sigh... I don't understand some of the business sense behind the powers that be!

Slash, would you like to attempt to recode years worth of 68k and PPC code to intel, oh and btw, we want you to do it for free.

PPC has its benefits which you obviously dont grasp, in terms of a laptop/netbook , think of the heat reduction properties.
