Hardware News   Hardware News : MPEG-2 Decoder for Mediator
posted by ikir on 15-Dec-2003 21:18:34 (2473 reads)
From Elbox:
Hello Mediator users,

We are now busy at completing work on support for a PCI hardware
MPEG-2 decoder card. Apart from vision decoding, compressed sound is
also decoded by the hardware of this card!

New versions of many drivers will become available in the coming days.
The update will include new versions of Voodoo, FastEthernet, TV tuner
and Spider card drivers.

The MPEG-2 decoder card requires simultaneous presence of a TV tuner
card with the SVHS input connector. The decoded video stream is sent
from the MPEG-2 decoder's card through the SVHS connector to the
TV tuner card input and it is viewed in the same way as television
(see here: http://www.elbox.com/products/tv_screens.html).

Sounds good, I have been waiting for an update since the announcement about Voodoo5 driver code going free.. I hope they added some support for Voodoo5 and VSA-100 chips.

unfortunately all the neat stuff that the Voodoo5 (VSA-100) can do in 2D isn't supported by P96 (like the diffrent blit modes, the nice aa, the alpha channel stuff, the video decoder acceleration etc.)

btw. I've got the full source release... the mac stuff is VERY exchiting to thumb through (OpenGL implementation, QucikDraw Acceleration, QuickTime Acceleration, Rave Driver, Glide, HW manager, the full source to 3dfx's Arcade library , input handling, sound handling, network handling etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.) I even succedded to turn on FSAA and some other stuff thanks to it... (too bad Warp3D went Nuts, probably due to the SLI).

btw2. when I asked Elbox if they planned to use the newly re-released source files... they said NO.
and one of the things you need to do to get the best performance out of the Voodoo5 (for instance) is to use the latest bios (at least 3dfx's 1.18 but preferebly the patched 1.18) which means the usage of two programs
1) the flashrom program
2) the flashrom editor/prefs (allows you to set paramers in the bios as defaults).

Cool. It would be even better if these drivers worked with divx cards too.

Hello,

I wonder what happened to the GeForce drivers they said they were working on?

Regards,

Frank.

GeForce drivers it is a nice diea but not very important..... for an Amiga Classic a voodoo3 is enough. And i don't think that the GeForce will have 3D drivers for Amiga Classics.

Anyway now a Mediator can turn an old Amiga in a ULTRA Powerfull computer. I'll never forget the first time i used a tv-card with Xeron's Super TV.... IMPRESSSSSIVE.

Hello,

True. But Voodoo`s are few and far between. And usually expensive.

I can buy a 32mb GeForce 2 PCI for £37 inc VAT & Delivery.

Regards,

Frank.

OK I can understand.

Anyway i don't think that GeForce drivers will be released. OS4 is coming, most people are buying A1, who have a Blizzard or CyberStorm can use a Permedia2 gfxcard or already have expanded their computer with a mediator+voodoo3,4,5. And some wait for the SharkPPC that should have an agp slot.

We'll see :)
