Software News   Software News : UAE 0.8.23
posted by evilrich on 27-Jan-2004 1:15:40 (5330 reads)
A new release of my unofficial, experimental version of UAE for Linux, Unix, OS X, BeOS and AmigaOS is available for download. UAE 0.8.23-20040125 is based on the latest WinUAE 0.8.23 and includes dozens of other updates and bugfixes. The Picasso96 emulation has been improved, as has the SDL graphics driver. The AmigaOS target also see numerous enhancements, including fuller config file support for selecting screenmodes.

Thanks Rich. Should try it on my aone and A1200.
Do you have plan to support .ipf too ? You said once you may make a warpos port, is it still on schedule ?

I talked to one of the chaps at the CAPS project regarding IPF support, and that should be possible on x86 Linux as soon as they finish a Linux port of the CAPS plug-in. It's a closed source, binary-only plug-in, so I can't do anything until they do. (There's apparently already a 68k Amiga version, so I may look at implementing support for that first).

Well. It's still on schedule in that I never had a schedule.

I can't currently produce a WarpOS binary, because I have no WarpOS compiler (and currently no system capable of running WarpOS binaries). Unless somebody can provide me with the necessary patches to build a WarpOS-targetted version of GCC etc. hosted on Linux, it's not going to happen any time soon.

I may be able to do a PowerUp version, if anybody's interested. I think I should be able to build a cross-compiler for PowerUp.

Cheers,
Rich

Check the Website of Jarmo Laakkonen, there is if I remember right a crosscompiler OS 3.x 68k -> WarpOS for download.

If you cannot find it there, contact me by private email (SteffenH@hyperion-entertainment.com).

Is there also an OS 4 Compile of UAE BTW ?

rich:this is good news :) , its so cool to see ya back in action (i was one of the very happy AF readers :))

anyway Powerup (pup) is ofcourse an option if you cant do WOS, but how this will act on the powerup cards i dont know (i guess it needs quite alot of optimization to make an good end result, but then again it might be enough :) )

pps: alot of PUP stuff is infact faster than wos , why i dont know but i only know what i have seen from older ports of stuff..

cheers

I heard about that, but his site no longer seem to exist. I tried the URL

. Has it moved elsewhere?

Does it support AGA, 040, JIT ?!?

I'd like to see a nice GUI (as in WinUAE), and the PPC version is a must, if you want to really do something with this emulator...

Anyhow, good to see an Amiga update of UAE.

AGA - yes (although probably only on a true-colour screen. I don't think it's capable of dithering AGA colours on an 8-bit or shallower screen. I'll have to check).

040 - yes.

JIT - no, not yet. The JIT is currently x86 only.

Me too.

There will be an AmigaOS config GUI eventually . . .

@ Toaks :
your setup is for ppc (amigaone) or amiga (real one) ?
I tried the older version on my A1200 but could not get any more than a grey screen.
Can you post your working config (if it is for a real amiga) ?

>pps: alot of PUP stuff is infact faster than wos , why i dont know but i only know >what i have seen from older ports of stuff..

A matter of compiler used (you will see those programs even run faster on PowerUP Emulation - and if they run on PowerUP Emulation they *do* in fact run on WOS, even if they are PowerUP programs).

If WarpOS programs are compiled on gcc they have same speed like PowerUP programs with gcc or SAS/C (actually gcc-compiled - no matter if WarpUP or PowerUP - should be faster than SAS/C (PowerUP) or vbcc/StormC (WarpUP). Not sure about the latest versions of vbcc, AFAIK it sped up a lot, maybe it is now
same speed like gcc, but I do not know. Older versions were noticably, though (And actually a long time past - before gcc 2.95.1 - StormC was faster than gcc on the tests I did, but that was really a long time ago...

About gcc/StormC: When I moved WarpSNES from StormC-gcc to normal-gcc (WarpUP) I got a speedup of nearly 10%... though WarpSNES is probably an extreme case... due to having many really small functions... other programs were mostly 3-5% or something like that if I remember right... and for some programs it was same speed... depends a lot on the program... anyways when I noticed I switched to gcc-WarpUP for compiling WarpUP-programs (what I still would like would be a modification of the StormC-GUI to call gcc-OS 4 (and maybe optionally gcc-WarpUP) :)

BTW: I sent Rich a gcc WarpUP compiler by ftp upload.

Thanks, Steffen. And your ElfCheckWOS tool from Aminet came in handy too.

Okay. So here's a WarpOS binary for everybody to test:http://www.rcdrummond.net/uae/test/uae-warpup-test.lha

It's a stripped down build - there's no filesystem or autoconfig emulation. And it'll probably crash and burn and make your machine beg for mercy. Who knows - not I.

Have fun,
Rich

Thats great !!! Now I have to find some time to test it.
Will sound be implemented soon (for aos) ? AFAIR sound was what slow the whole thing dramatically so I guess even if the wos/aos are working nicely, adding sound may change that.

Can't say I'm surprised.

I'm afraid the exception dump doesn't help me much, either. Does it produce any output on the shell at all?

If you are interested in helping me get the WarpUp version to work, perhaps we can carry on this discussion privately: Mail me at uae@rcdrummond.net.

Will be done very soon btw.

New ports will be for x86 and PPC Linux (to add to the existing W32 and Amiga 68K versions), as that is the hardware we have.
