from time to time i read some bizzare/funny stuff and today was one of em :)


rouge allready said that the Top toolbar is editable in many ways , but still several in here complains about the memory in use/total is a mess , i sugest that you who complain read his post earlier in the thread :)

anyway i agree that its not perfect (the one in the screenshots) but its like in dopus magellan2 , where eu can select several ways of showing it.


hope that makes people happy oh and i would like someone to confirm it anyway as i dont have an A1 anymore :)


rock ON hyperion , shame about descent beeing only sw render atm :) but i am pretty confident we will see an update there soon :) , ps: descent 1 pup/wos is a game i love! , but sadly it doesnt work with mediator and warp3d (on my system) ..

Virtual memory != swapping. Last I heard, AmigaOS 4.0 will not include a swapper.

You may find this PDF article interesting: Virtual Memory within Embedded Systems. The article is a bit biased of course but you should be able to get the idea...

Yes but if you want the processor to access more memory than is physically available, you need swapping. I have 256Mb in my AmigaOne, and OS4 reports just over a gig of virtual memory available. I suspect swapping may be involved

You mean allocating a part of the bit range for alpha channel data? For example like 3 bits for alpha channel and 5 for bitmap?

Yeah that would work. Though perhaps not very pretty :)

The best result would come from using a separate bitmap and alpha channel map. With 8 bits in both of them. Perhaps by adding a 3rd and 4th image to the icon data.

Unless I'm completely wrong, 8 bit paletized icons use a Colour Look Up Table (CLUT), so you have a palette with 256 entries, (256 = 1^ 8 Bit), but each entry in the actual palette would be 32 bit. Hence any entry can have alpha associated with it.

No, the palette is individual 256 colors for each icon.

No, you don't have to use swapping. Virtual Memory only means that you have a virtual address space. If your memory runs full, swapping would kick in, but you can as well have it report out-of-memory.

@crumb:

#1: You can select "load image" in RAWBinfo to replace the icon image. Drag&Drop will favour the icon image of the dragged file.

#2: We'd like to avoid patching into things like that. It's OK for a patch because you can disable it, but other than that you need to be careful not to break something.

@Orgin:

4.1 will probably see a complete overhaul of workbench and the icon system.

@Soft:

I guess so, yes.

@Martyn:

Start Workbench preferences, delete the "workbench titlebar" field, and press the "insert" button next to it a few times. You can put anything in there (Of course you have to wait for OS 4 )

Yes, much the same way as it works with VisualPrefs. Intuition is now taken care of by, among others, Massimo Tantignone, the author of VisualPrefs.

No, graphics card memory cannot be swapped, since you cannot control/intercept accesses to it from the graphics chip. Only things that go through the CPU can be swapped.

Which is not the same thing. Introducting an alpha channel to the palette data would make all pixels using a specific color have the same alpha value. Ie, if you have a red color and you want 32 levels of transparency of that color you would use up 32 colors of the palette. If you have a separate alpha channel bitmap then each pixel can have an individual alpha value regardless of what color you happen to use.

While true, you will not notice the difference unless you have massive icons. For instance most PS2 games use 16/256 colour textures due to memory limitations, these are quantised down from raw 32 bit image (with alpha) and in general are ok.

Of course if your icon has a different rgba value for every pixel and where so different from each other so that it would not quantise down to 256 colours, you would have a very noisy icon!

I was pointing out that that was not the solution I was talking about.

And besides, imagine painting an icon with transparency, and then be forced to requantisise the data every time you load/save it. Or either keep track of which colors are transparent, how much and so forth in your head. It would be a big mess imho.

I like more the classic Glow Icons, with 256 color palette for every icon! Anyway i hope that Elena will port Power Icons to AmigaOS4.
