Each gadget image seen on screen is the result of a number of specific layers combinated to create the final look. There's the basic image data layer and a 1-bit mask map, of course. Then there is also optional support for alpha maps, shadow maps, highlight maps and ghosting maps. These can all be used in lots of interesting combinations.

Sounds excellent! Also sounds like something that can be accellerated by 3D hardware when the time comes and it is supported by OS4 (a polygon with a transparency map, a texture map, a reflection map, etc).

I really would like to see an article showing how these can be used, or at least some example pictures.

@Toaks
I guess I was too eager to see the pretty screenshots and forgot to read the descriptions.

Here's an updated pic using the same icon set which you can download from here. I don't know how long I'll keep the grab up but if the link is dead (Weeks/months from now & you wanna see it again, PM me)

It's probably not worth requesting slinky sets of PNG icons on the final OS4 CD as we don't yet actually have PNG icon support but it's worth checking this archive out if/when we do.

Those was some sweet lookin' icons!

From: a chair in front of my computer.

Hmmm. Two screenshots of Descent2, showing how smooth and playable it looks. I assume the fps is great, very playable, the images scrolling by like velvet or silk on a ........

Holy CRUD!

So THIS is why OS4 keeps getting delayed!

Rogue! Put down that freakin' joystick and get back to work!!

Seriously, it looks unbe-freakin'-leavable!
Nice work. I used to say I was holding my breath til I turned blue, but some people thought that meant that I was planning to buy a Pegasos! So I'm holding my breath til I turn red.

Argh - I'm just about to book my summer holiday today... but I want an AmigaOne and OS4 soooooooo much

Looks fantastic - can't wait to find out how responsive and configurable it is...

Hyperion (and OS4 team) - I reckon that you should all be made honorary members of something or other. Free beer for life at every Amiga show you attend, or summat

Hyp, new screenshots looks very nice! Finally no complains about colours :)

Well - this colour sheme is excellent for default one [and backdrop ;0) hehe]

The first thing I see missing is - clock displayed on title bar. There should write among other things, something like this on the right corner:

wednesday 4-Feb-2004 / 10:22 AM

And if you will include PNG icons [with shadows or whatever] - OS4.0 will look very polished!

tnx for listening :)

dj.

@Mr.Carlito:

Apollo is the name of the CPU core. The 7451 was named Vger, the followup was Apollo.

@LottaRosie

Freespace isn't done yet, though it's about 90% finished.

@mr2

I've got a lot of other stuff on the DH0: partition. Normally you would get around 30MB of stuff for a standard installation.

@Hattig

SVG icons are a possibility, but we're not likely going to touch the format just now, since there is a rewrite of Workbench and the icon system scheduled for OS 4.1 or 4.2.

@angrybrit

No, that is ArtEffects, not GIMP.

@djnick

I really love your backdrops

hmk: more like 10 , 50% and then 70% , after that its xx.0000000001 and so on :)

anyway its a port of their own work so i dont really see it as a huge problem, but then again maybe it is! , since the gfx api still has bits of 68k in it,

just an assumption anyway.

but then again we dont need it before os4 is released ;) , or heh atleast pre release cd :)

Why should this be a problem for an Application ? I do not understand this.

It is just that right now OS 4 itselves has absolute priority.

Not that I care about visuals, the OS in itself is what matters to me but...
Er... ok don't want to spoil the fun, but I don't like the grey color on window borders, it should be marine blue or blue like on 3.x. Grey is tedious. And the menu bar also grey?!
Hughh...

I know it's configurable but the default look(s) will be important when screenshots start spreading over mainstream sites.

By the way, can you make it look like 3.x and also 1.x ?
I bet if you made default look like 1.x general PC users that reminded AOS would just think "pah, it's still like the old Workbench" or something like that....not..

@Jose

For example I like it

I think that the default look is very nice, because the majority of the people likes it, they will never please everyone

@Jose

Inactive window borders have always been grey by default (if you don't think 1.x)
I think what you see in those screenshot is lot's of inactive windows. Active windows borders have been blue in all of the earlier OS4 screenshots.

Anyway I think that those new screenshots look wery good, I love those, and I do like those grey window borders and screen titlebar too

"...they will never please everyone "

I know. I guess various default looks will solve that problem....
