News   News : AmigaOS 4.0 Pre-release to be bundled with AmigaOne
   posted by MikeB on 23-Apr-2004 22:00:11 (5983 reads)
The German languaged Amiga portal Amiga-News.de contacted Hyperion to confirm that the AmigaOS 4.0 Developer Pre-release will come bundled with newly sold Amiga systems when available.

Customers who acquire an AmigaOne before the publication of the final version of AmigaOS 4 will receive the same support and the same entrance to (on-line available) updates as "Earlybird" owners will be granted. They get the full version of Amiga OS4 delivered subsequently by their dealer, as soon as the finished version is available.

Look at the title:

AmigaOne to be bundled with AmigaOS 4.0 Pre-release

The way this reads, buying the AmigaOS 4.0 Pre-release, you get an AmigaOne bundled with it. That's even better than previous announcements!

@STRICQ

Darn, that's one expensive OS!

But it sounds like a better deal to purchase a copy of OS4 and get an A1 thrown in, than to buy a Peg and get MOS bundled with it. In your face, Genesi! Wish you'd'a thought'a that one first, doncha?!

I'd just wish that the dealers would have received this info beforehand...

Hmm.... I'm not sure what all we are supposed to understood from this response. The German source was really not any more verbose either.

Does this mean that Hyperion has decided to unilaterally extend the earlybird "free OS with A1 purchase" all the way to the date of the full release availability? Won't this piss off Eyetech, and all the old earlybirds? They have had the earlybird offer as something to attract early purchasers, and now it becomes a freebie that everyone gets anyway? Or does it mean that the cost of the release will now be added into the price of further A1s sold? Or does it mean that A1 purchasers get all the pre-releases but have to pay for the final release later? I know some folks could get angry at them no matter what they decided to do, but it seems like Eyetech and Hyperion didn't coordinate and publicize these plans well.

First decide with all your business partners what you will do, then put it in writing and tell customers, then do it. Don't make a decision, surprise your business partners, don't bother to tell the customers, and then when some asks let the information filter out via informal websites....

I guess I'm just grumpy still being at work on Friday night...

@mjohnson
Now, we are waiting for dual G5 AOne bundled with Prerelease. It'll be damned cheap

@Juzz

But the A1's still in stock are Earlybirds? Or have they started shipping non-Earlybird boards yet?

If the case is the former, then there's still some time to work out the details on how to handle this. And I don't really see a problem with coming forward with this as soon as possible, to create some market interest. If it is the latter, however, then it's not such a clever approach to "announce" it this way, IMHO.

@swoodall

I'd imagine that it's gonna be possible to buy an A1 and "pre-pay" for the OS, in which case I don't really see a problem with getting the pre-release as a bonus at the time of purchase. (All pure speculation on my part, of course.)
It doesn't sound very convenient to me to sell all the mobos from now until the OS4 release as Linux-only and then offer the "upgrade" once OS4 is released.

@mr2

Well, PPC hardware is finally available for practically "nothing."

And I thought the Earlybird offer ended on March 31 2004, according to the info from Eyetech...

Oh well, one should have learnt to take all timetables with Amiga with a pinch of saltby now. Or bags of salt would propably be better.

Ah the devil is in the details :)

I am one of the early birds, so I am hoping that this offers means, that the A1 with be shipped with the OS, that the OS cost will be added on. But it is not for me to decide that. It will be interesting . . .

But the real question everyone has now is will they have to purchase that copy. It reads like they will get OS4 Release version for free. Someone still needs to clarify this and confirm the meaning for end users.

I dont see any mention of the word "free" there.

They are saying that people will get pre-release OS4 and have the rights the same as early bird owners in regard to upgrades and bug fixes etc.
Once OS4 is completed it will be sent out, but pre-release support will end.
You still need to purchase your copy of OS4.

Well, if you read back what I quoted, it says:

Quote:

By your same logic, I can say I don't see any mention of the word "purchase" in there. Get the picture now? It needs to be clarified, because it is open to both interpretations the way it's stated.

@MikeB

I reworded the title of the news story as well... it did sound a bit odd. Hope you don't mind.
