Software News   Software News : Better quality AmigaOS4 Video of native P96 drivers
   posted by MikeB on 12-Jul-2004 6:04:29 (5894 reads)
Due to criticism regarding Crisot's first video, the beta-tester created a new video (24.7 MB file) to demonstrate the speed of OS4 running with a native version of P96 combined with an accelerated Voodoo 3 driver. This version shows almost no flickering and also shows Quake launching and running.

Like with the previous video this is not an official OS4 demonstration.

I often have problems viewing these .avi movies. How do I see the movie? (I'm at work using Win98 atm.)

I managed to get the movie rolling for 5 secs, then it freeze. I also tried to convert it to MPEG1 format with an utility, I downloaded, and the MPEG1 movie also run for only 5 secs. Hmmm, I've seen similar problems before. Why don't people just use a compatible format (like MPEG!?) in the first place, when they make these movies?

well I just looked again at the movie... and dragging the windows is indeed much smoother. But then again, scrolling in the window with icons in it is much slower.

Still, I do prefer AmigaOS over windows etc. because of it being intuitive, which is something I think I will find back in OS4.0 not?

AOS really handles icons in a totally different way than windows.
(Amiga has custom icons, icon data in separate files, icons can have any size, etc. Windows has just those handicapped icons)
I'm sure AOS icon handling is more difficult to make fast, it's more demanding to GFX subsystem and to GFX HW 2D abilities.

I played around with w2000 a little bit.
P4 2.6ghz & Radeon7500. One can still see the icons updating when scorlling in the window (that's when the system is idling, if anything is running, or swapped from/to the HDD, it easily morphs to that "snail in the glue" again).

You know, I had a hard time believing the rate things were going at at first too.

It would be good in subsequent demos if we can get the system clock with seconds updating on the screen in the background so people will have no reason to believe it got sped up.

The fact that so many people were sceptical of the speed is a testament to the great work being done. It was too fast to be believed!!!!

Looks like the A1 IS NOT too slow afterall!!!! AOS makes low spec hardware look good.

Keep up the good work Hyperion.

If I undertand well what you want say...

the icons refresh is a bit "slow" because the DMA is not yet enabled (the loading from the HD is not yet full-speed and then also the drawing/redrawing of files/icons is slowed a bit).

Someone (Rog.. ? Ent... ? Hyper... ? Crisot ? Anyone ? ) can confirm this ?

are the icons then reloaded every time they are visible and not stored in memory?
By the way, how does the icon system works now? I remember a story about the icon system in the Amiga, that it had to change because it had too many problems when used in the new AmigaOS4.0 (size etc. was a problem when for example using 24 or 32 bit bitmaps).

So can a file have it's real own icon or choose a icon from a general database or only choose from a general database or something totally different?
Just curious

@SkEb
afiak the icons on os4 are loaded again everytime you open a drawer, regardless of the fact you opened the drawer previously or not.
windows has some icon cache mostly for menu and taskbar icons, you should notice that when browsing the start menu entries for the first time.
there is no mayor change in the amigaos icon system in the os4 pre, and probably not until the gui-system gets an overhaul that was told to be adressed for future amigaos version.
pls note the fact that i got no clue what im talking about and the info stated here might not be correct

impressive video btw, woohoo

@SkEb

As in all versions of Workbench, all files can have their own icon. If they do not have an icon, a default one will be assigned to them according to the file type (note - not file extension, it checks the actual file), and for example pictures have Multiview as default tools whereas PDF files have a pdf reader and so on.

Also, an icon can have two different images, so selecting a drawer for example changes the image from a closed drawer to an opened one.

@Crisot

Thanks for creating a new video.

Maybe this one will shut up those idiots on ann.lu .......

DISCLAIMER:
Sometimes, I think that certain people on ann.lu just like to heckle each other and try to see who can make the most outrageous comments. It seems to be the same ones every time, no matter what the topic is.

Anyway, nice to see that people are taking notice of OS4 ...

I too would like to see this video but cannot because it's another .avi file.

Maybe the new MooVid plays them but the Pre doesn't have that. Any chance of this being converted to mpeg?

FuZion.

Just compare the speed of Quake at the end, you'll see that it runs exactly as it should be.

I always said in the past the the emulated graphics system is the major hold-up. Now it shows
