Software News   Software News : OS4 native version of Final PlayStation Emulator (FPSE)
   posted by MikeB on 16-Jul-2004 16:36:47 (3103 reads)
AmiDog has released an OS4 native version of his playstation emulator FPSE: "Not really a new version, but rather an OS4 native one. I've just ported it over in a few hours, and only tested a few games, so there may be some bugs I've not found yet. Also, the GUI is not recompiled and still 68k, and there's no Warp3D version available."

Update: A new revision is now available: "Still based on FPSE 0.09, this new OS4 release has sound support (can not be disabled currently) and tries to limit the framerate to the correct one (automatic frameskip not implemented yet)."

@MikeB

It seems Voyager is not displaying the page properly. I'm using
Ibrowse to download it now. I think I'll be registering Ibrowse soon.

I haven't any PSX cd right now to test. But if i run it in window mode i see the sony logo... PINK i think it is a bug with the 32bit mode of my WB. Infact if i run the emulator on its own screen the color is ok.

Now i'm searching some PSX games

Thanks AmiDOG for an another good program.

@Toaks

I tryed(for few mionutes) only "Front Mission 3" and it works VERY
fine with compileed code (instead of interpretated).
But at this stage no audio is available and therefore I wont play it
on FPSE (I prefer it on my ps2 )
As spoked ikir only on fullscreen colors(and speed) works fine.
Thanks AmiDog :)

Tuxedo.

Works nicely here too.. Now I just got to find some games to play. Goodjob AmiDog. Only bug I encountered was with window mode, as some described it above.

This ISOs may keep you busy for some time with the PSX emulator.

FPSE currently only work with little endian (aka PC) 15/16bit modes and thus break if you run WB in 24/32bit. It's on top of my todo-list now.

BTW, new version released, with sound support and somewhat correct framerate (if your CPU can handle it, that is).

@AmiDog,

Well done!

Would a clever person like you like to do a Sega Model 2 and 3 emulator by any chance?

@ AmiDog

How about uploading your AmigaOS4 (alpha-beta) ports to os4depot.net as well? I think it would be sad if people didn't know about your efforts simply because they missed the related news items.

You could still add your homepage URL into the Readme documentation, so people know where to get the most up-to-date information and support. I believe this may eventually even increase traffic to your homepage and surely increase community coverage.

I've tried the latest version, and while it is an impressive emulator (I've never seen emulated Playstation games running before), it is sadly crash prone on my system, even with plenty of stack. I have a bunch of original demo cds, and they all run for max 5 minutes before a crash occures. Emulation is fast with some games (wild 9), a bit slow with unresponsive commands with others. Sound works correctly, but it's missing on mpg videos.
My cpu is a G4 at 933 MHz.
The emulator is very promising, thought, and with a newer core and some optimizations it should rock! Thanks for this porting!

Some tips on setting the emulation through its GUI:
- set a high value for the stack
- select "Screen - scale to fullscreen", as device set "devs:a1ide.device", unit is usually 2 or 3.
- don't worry for audio being "off" only, it works nevertheless
- set the compiler to "On", it speeds emulation quite a bit, GPU must be set to "software".

What would be nice (besides Warp3D support of course) would be Altivec. AFAIK the PSX has some kind of vector unit

@Mr.Return

Altivec support will be added (or atleast atempted) as soon as the required OS4pre update is released. The PSX has a kind of vector unit, and also has a video decoder (kind of a partial MPEG decoder) which would benefit a lot from Altivec optimizations.
