Internet News   Internet News : Main AmiNet Site Gone, Possibly For Good
   posted by OSS542 on 26-Sep-2004 1:08:41 (5656 reads)
It looks like the main AmiNet site is gone, perhaps for good now. Many if not all the other US sites also appear to be gone, and perhaps two or three sites (uk, se, cz) in the official aminet site list mirrored at the European site list. It's not looking promising here.....can we as a community do anything about this "AmiNet rot" ?

Staff Note: It is not clear yet which of the "old archives" will be allowed to remain once the new drives are in place.

Here is the notice from the main AmiNet site: (URL : http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WUArchive has suffered a RAID failure, it's nStor controller died. The disks may get recycled for another use.

This is what's available

A replacement machine has been ordered, it will be the last half of October before it's back.

WUArchive has been around for a long time, and evolved through several hardware configurations and owners.

It's content will be changing, some old stuff will remain, other chunks will go. For items to remain, they will require a sponsor from here at Washington University. A written statement of benefit maybe required. We are leaning toward K-12 outreach, and open source mirrors for wustl.edu.

If you have ideas please contact Allen Rueter 314/935-6429 or Dr. Bill Smart in the media and machines lab, 5-4749.

Thanks for your patience.

The wuarchive site handled many archives, and not just aminet. It was something like the "Smithsonian Institution" for the Internet at one time. I think they'd look at the collections on an archive by archive basis (ex. either keep all of aminet, or dump all of it.)

Anyone have an idea of how many gigabytes the aminet archive is? How many DVDs (or DVD-R) would it take up?

Since I don't know the background arrangement of the working mirrors, I have to ask what would prevent the mirrors from taking over the duties?

The mirrors could probably take over, but they seem to be disappearing one by one as well.....about half of the sites in the AmiNet list do not answer anymore, and appear to be gone.

My post seems to have disappeared, so I'll try this again....

AmiNet as a whole takes up about 20+gb. The directories "mods", "pix", and "demos" account for about 12 gb of that. The Amiga specific software is around 8gb or so.

20gb of Data is very little compared to how cheap hard drives are these days, and also how servers are configured (I have been building servers with either RAID'd 146gb or minimum 36gb drives). And they are fairly cheap.

If they want to move away from data stored on drives couldnt they host it on a DVD-R Library? (With new/current uploads being stored on disk?).

Cheaper still, purchase 2x 250gb SATA-IDE drives and Mirror the drives for redundancy and have a purpose built aminet box, all you need these days is atleast a PIII-500....

I think the only killer would be bandwidth, hardware is relatively cheap.

Maybe KMOS or other prominent players in the amiga community should look at hosting an aminet mirror.....

I wish I had the bandwidth to burn to host that, not sure but I think I could fit it in somewhere space wise. Maybe if the community donated some money for bandwidth, does anyone know average ammounts for aminet?

Is there any way to upload files to aminet at the moment? I've had a bunch of files waiting for aminet uploading on os4depot for quiet a while now.

/Björn

I really don't get it, OK, the main site has a hard ware fault, so what, that's the whole point of having a mirror so that it can take over in that situation, OK, updates may not happen while things are sorted, but why are the mirrors going off line ? They should not be afffected.

Sommat strange is going on here

I would guess that the sites that mirror aminet just can't afford to run anymore or can't justify te mmount of disk space it takes up.
As for the "owner", see http://no.aminet.net/aminet/team.html

just to let everyone know..... i've started wget running .. i'm gonna mirror the whole of aminet down onto my local server.... i only have 512mbps broadband, but i thought that step 1 was to make sure that the archive didn't get lost!!!

we can sort out how we can host it later....(!)

btw - does anyone know what bandwidth the current (that is the ones that still exist!!) have?

i would be interested to know how much it would cost to upgrade my line to something that could cope!?

Yes, I intend to go exactly the same thing when I get home later tonight, I am going to try and download the whole archive, as it stands it will be too big for my hosting service, but I agree we should make sure that this archive is not lost forever, a handful of us on here doing this is enough to make sure that does not happen.

The Swedish aminet mirror isn't gone as someone said earlier. Just that the URL has changed and the www-front is no longer fully functional. here and then you can always access it via ftp.
