hardware OS4   hardware OS4 : New AmigaOne firmware available
   posted by EntilZha on 6-Oct-2004 11:25:20 (20397 reads)
Leuwen, Belgium - October 6th 2004.

In preparation for the upcoming update of Amiga OS 4.0, Hyperion Entertainment is pleased to announce the immediate availability of the much improved U-Boot 1.1.1 for AmigaOne SE and XE motherboards.

New features include:

* Support for multiple graphics cards. At this time the last graphics card (usually the AGP card) is used for primary display. Later versions will include an option to choose.
* Support for booting off a Silicon Image 0680 IDE controller. This feature has to be selected manually at the moment, by entering setenv ide sii from the U-Boot shell.
* New CPU support: IBM PowerPC 750GX is now fully supported.
* A problem has been fixed that made the U-Boot environment settings unavailable when rebooting from Linux.
* Support for LBA48 IDE Drivers, i.e. you can now boot off drives that are bigger than 160 GB.
* Support for the new Second-Level Bootloader (that can boot Linux besides AmigaOS), to be distributed with the upcoming AmigaOS 4 update.
* Numerous bug fixes and improvements.

The new U-Boot will be required for the upcoming update of Amiga OS 4.0, to be released shortly to registered AmigaOS 4.0 pre-Release owners.

The download is available in our Downloads section.

@ Coder

Well, you can probably boot the CD by first booting your normal installation, then soft re-booting (with modules still loaded) with the installation CD and making the update. Don't update the SLB, though. It might work that way. Apart from the boot loader, it should not be a problem... theoretically, at least... never tested this...

@EntilZha

Sounds to me the update is a better path. Rigth? I better look out for a UPS I can borrow. Or otherwise I just take the gamble. I think in the middle of the night might be a good idea to do it.

I guess the idea behind this is to get everyones UBoot up to date so that the OS4 update can be used in an instant. Keep eveyone in line. Good thinking Batman!

At first I was a little worried about doing this because I had problems with the first flash for the OS4 Pre CD... Theeeen I thought, knickers to it. Just do it.

Well what can I say. It was so simple I almosty thought I was using an Amiga Hope anyone having those little probs get through it fine.

Cheers Hyperion.

@ikir

Cable Select... I remember playing with that last time. No, I set it back to Master/Slave. I've tried changing the cable, disconnected the slave, played with most of the options in U-Boot and nothing helps.

Oh, except I looked at printenv. Now, I probably shouldn't mess with options I don't understand, but I saw one called "ide_doreset". It was set to "on".

I've just switched it off. U-Boot complains profusely when it scans the IDE bus, but everything seems to work and a cold boot now happens in around 35 seconds. I don't hold out much hope of booting from CD-ROM but I can live without that for the moment, and it is a more preferable temporary solution than having to enter and exit the boot options menu every time I reboot.

Chris

@Chris_Y
If you want to try, restore the default setting and then reset them with the guide.

Do it with Uboot (it can do that now)

or

You can also reset uboot with these steps:
1-Turn off A1 (also the power supply)
2-remove the battery clock, insert it turning it over. Wait 10 seconds or more.
3-remove the battery and insert it correctly.
4-Turn on your A1, type menu and set all back.
Ehi i didn't take any responsibility if you destroy your Amy! So don't try these steps if you aren't brave enough!

@Hyperion

THX again. Udate worked without problems!!! Great. Now AOS4 beta seems to very very near. My hint is this weekend or Halloween

(I downloaded the CD iso to my Mac at work. Copied it to my Swissknife Memorystick. Went to the Windows PC at work (I could have downloaded it there too, but my main computer is a MAC) burnt the CD with WinOnCD. Drove home and installed it in 2-3 minutes on my A1!)
It's great if HW producers adhere to industrial (ISO, IEEE...) standards (XML, iso, ...)

Dumb question time!

Will the old U-Boot settings be valid after flashing the new one - do I need to re-configure U-Boot settings as they are done in the OS4 Pre-Release install guide Section 2?

Just want to be sure

Hi there :)

After the update I got the same problem as poweramiga2002 ..when booting, i now get a reading sector .. with a rather irritating scrolldown :(

It also seems to skip the amiga multiboot, and starts os4 no matter what. (atleast im cant see a menu where im able to choose wether to start os4 or linux). -still, if i choose linux-boot in the settingsmenu, then linux starts without problems.

I have 2 seperate harddisks in my amigaONE - first primary is my linux harddisk, and my first slave is the amiga harddisk.. is the problem somehow related to this ?

please let me know if any of you know how to fix this problem! :)

And thanks for the update! :)

Depends... it might be worth a try without update...

Yeah, but watch out. Don't do it when the moon is new

@ fuskoSCN

See Andrea's (AV) post. The old SLB has this problem. Will be fixed with the update.

Can someone at Hyperion comment on this? Is the driver for OS4 only compatible with one of them, or both?

I'll ask.

Probably too soon, but any word yet?

This is great news!!
I can't wait until I get an AOne so I can install this!!!

Does anyone know when the next batch of XE boards
are expected to ship?

I'm not sure about the next batch delivery date for the XE boards. I'm hoping to get a uA1-C, and if I do, I'll be showing it off at one of our meetings. Hopefully they will ship with the 1.1.1 Uboot already in place.

I'm thinking of getting a micro A1 for Christmas, but it will be the I version not the C - from what I can tell from looking around, the VIA686 chips on the C (the same as the XE has) are the root cause for all the "articia" problems people have been having with the XE (including me BTW - this is not just ann cr@p). The I has a different southbridge which, IIRC, is the same as the one on the faster IDE cards UBoot 1.1.1 supports. So I'll be getting not only a faster IDE bus, I'll also be able to surf the web with DMA enabled on my hard drive. That's probably going to be a useful thing to have when say, streaming mp3s from amigagames.com or doing any form of online gaming (I don't want levels to take forever to load just because I want to frag some friends instead of bots)

I truly don't know why Alan decided to keep using the 686s for the C when he has an alternative - before there was no choice, but now... it is a price thing?

@Rogue and Chris_Y

I have an SE and had no problems with rebooting in
Linux with the .19 linux-kernel. Sometimes, let's say
1 time in 20 times my dvd-drives blocks uboot, so i'd
say that it is more a drive issue then a uboot issue.
With the update from uboot 1.1.1 this is now a bit more
frequently as it doubles the possibility of blocking uboot
with the 2 boots.

The best way i think for you Chris_Y is to interrupt the
first boot and to type your commands:
-boota
-diskboot 500000 x:x; bootm
This way the second boot is cancelled i guess.

Can someone confirm this?

Booting into Linux via the sil card now . I compiled a new kernel (2.4.22, for now) with only sil support (no VIA) and it seems to run fine.
