Hardware News   Hardware News : FastATA 1200 MK-III released
   posted by DJS on 8-Nov-2004 18:34:23 (2694 reads)
ELBOX COMPUTER, the most creative and productive manufacturer of hardware for Amiga computers, announces a new addition to its leading ATA drive controller line for Classic Amiga computers with the FAST ATA 1200 MK-III controller.

Like its predecessors, FAST ATA 1200 MK-III provides high performance support for up to four ATA/IDE storage devices. This new controller offers enhanced performance with lower processor load when compared against earlier FastATA 1200 versions. The 48-bit LBA (Logical Block Addressing) capability assures support for EIDE drives beyond the 137GB (up to 2TB). The new controller fits any towerised Amiga 1200 as well as the standard A1200 desktop version.

FAST ATA 1200 MK-III ships with the fastest Amiga CD filesystem--AllegroCDFS. The FAST ATA 1200 MK-III package includes one 80-wire ATA-33 cable for connecting up to two drives (master and slave).

Features:
* Fast transfer rate of up to 16.6MB/s
* Compatibility with hard drives up to 2TB (2,000GB)
* Support for ATAPI devices (CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, ZIP, LS-120)
* Two buffered and terminated EIDE ports
* Accelerated 32-bit access
* Fits in a standard A1200 desktop case

Pricing and availability:
The FAST ATA 1200 MK-III controller will be on sale as of 15th November 2004 at the suggested retail price of EUR 69.95 (VAT excl.)
To locate an authorized distributor in your area visit the Elbox Computer website at <http://www.elbox.com/buy.html>. To purchase the product online visit the Elbox On-line Store for European Union customers or for customers from other countries.

For more info, see the FastATA 1200 website and AllegroCDFS website.

Is Elbox the only company apart from Individual Computers still producing new hardware for classic Amigas?

Foody:
What does the UK have to do with anything? :)

Anyway, I guess Germany would be the place you'd be looking for. The user base is probably quite a bit larger there than in the UK.

Ok. Good!
But where is the update for FastATA 4000????
Or has the A1200 version just now caught up?

Does the 4000 version support LBA48?

Ok, so the new MKIII version offers a performance advantage over the MKII with a reduced processor load. The current FastATA solution on classic Amiga is indeed very CPU intensive and this is probably it's biggest disadvantage, so the MKIII is looking to improve on one of the PowerFlyer's weakest areas, which is good news.

I'd be interested to see some performance figures for this device.

By the way, the reason it's showing an AF Gold award is because the powerflyer they're currently showing on the webpage is the old version, which WAS reviewed by Amiga Format.

Obviously they haven't got around to updating the page yet

What about those, who think that AmigaOne is not an upgrade, but a platform change? Because of the very different (pc like) architecture..

They can go design and build themselves a new motherboard.

Seriously, what does it matter if your machine has its own custom chipset or not? If that *really* matters to you, go out and buy some really obscure video and sound cards and write AmigaOS drivers for them
