I was going to post a question here, but I found the answer on the GoldED forums.

Quote:

So how (not) compatible is the current golded studio with A1/OS4/GCC?

"It is not guaranteed to be compatible with OS4. The software is developed on and tested with classic AmigaOS (3.5, to be specific), UAE, MorphOS and a Pegasos. It is not tested with OS4/A1 on my side. Trial versions can and should be downloaded prior to ordering for OS4. That said, user reports indicate that the current version of GoldED Studio AIX is compatible with OS4. As to gcc, the OS4 SDK pre-release is not integrated. If and when a public and re-distributable SDK is released, integration will be considered and attempted. Integration refers to such matters as syntax highlighting for OS4 functions, function lookup, support for OS4-specific compiler options, switching between compilers etc."

One can't help wondering why the GoldED team don't purchase an AmigaONE with OS4. Then the problem would be gone since every one who have OS4 today have the SDK..
Well well.. I guess that's an investment like any other.

In fairness, I believe the GoldEd "team" is actually one person. It is not reasonable to suggest he just ups and buys an A1, especially since ISTR he already has a Pegasos.

OTOH, I do feel this program is too expensive in the context of today's Amiga "market". There are some serious bugs in the version I have, and it will cost me more than I'm willing to pay to get any service packs.

But yet another aspect is that it is good to see any software being developed right now, and the author is to be congratulated for that, particularly when he said, about two years ago, that there would be no more development!

Let's wait until public SDK is released. I'm sure Dietmar is willing to support his clients.

@Shoe

Then you can also say why they (Eytech / KMOS / Hyperion) don't lend him an A1 machine. I think that GoldED is the best editor on our platform (at least the one with more features packed) and the software that comes closer to an IDE.
The main problem, IMHO, is that there is no public SDK for AOS4, yet. Let's hope that this will change soon.
Ciao,
Francesco

The reason that GoldED does not integrate with the OS4 SDK is not that I do not have a AmigaOne but the copyright state of the SDK. Hyperion must decide that they want the current SDk to be public and allow its use. If that decision is made, it's a matter of an upload to get devtools developers like me started.

There appears to be a bit of confusion between "Public SDK" and "public SDK": when somebody from the OS4 team speaks about Public SDK, they usually mean a special SDK with cross compiler. Apparently that is a work in progress. What I mean with public SDK is making the SDK as-it-exists public. In other words, a decision, an upload.

If you want inexpensive, you can grab any other editor on Aminet or my own microgolded (for the price of a Happy Meal) or my own GoldED5, which is free. GoldED Studio AIX is a complex product and it has its price. Discounts are available to user groups and development teams to make it more affordable.

Nine out of ten service packs are free. Some cost a fee but that was always reasonable if you upgrade quickly and do not wait and let the price go up. Pricing might change soon: it is planned that every future update will cost a small fee, depending on the amount of work gone into it, and that the price of upgrading from A to D will be the added price of the updates between them. To get transparency into upgrade prices.

I don't dispute that at all. You are the author and distributor, you are entitled to charge whatever you see fit. I just feel that ~£50 is a bit steep for a hobby market. It brackets it in the upper part of the price range of most currently developed products for Classic Amigas.

If I didn't think it was any good, I wouldn't have bought it, would I?

So can I still get the older service packs up to the point where it would cost extra?

Please download service packs when they are available. It's impractical to keep older versions around (they are different for each user, it's not a matter of making a backup of a single file). It appears you are using SP11 and didn't make the upgrade to SP12 because is was a CD and not a download? That was, if I may say so, an unlucky decision because all subsequent upgrades up to the latest SP23 were free downloads. Btw, upgrades don't have to be made in perfect order: GoldED Studio SP12 can be upgraded directly to GoldED Studio SP23.

So has anyone ever bothered to actually email Hyperion and ask if they can redistribute the OS4 SDK with their product?

I'm finding it just a bit too convenient to sit back and blame Hyperion for a problem that may not even exist...

I had a brief email exchange with Ben many months ago about OS4. I told him I'd appreciate it if the SDK would be public and described GoldED's devkits tree. That must suffice, I'm not going to get on anybody's nerves, especially after the last email remained unreplied. Hans-Jörg knows my position, if only by means of forums. Sitting back: I wish. There'll be a comprehensive upgrade to the plug-in system before the year ends. Spell work in captial letters.
