Software News   Software News : CWMMoria 1.1.0 RPG OS4 Released
posted by Toaks on 20-Nov-2004 17:29:03 (4740 reads)
CWMMoria is a rogue-like RPG game, based on the original Moria. Pick a character and face the horrors of a large mine and perhaps even Balrog himself..

This game was made for the classic Amiga's over a decade ago and it became quite popular with RPG fanatics.

Not much of a looker theese days but it sure holds alot of playbility so be sure to check it out.

CWMMoria is Downloadable from OS4Depot HERE

Have fun.

What a coinicedence...

I've been away from this site for a few weeks, utterly hooked on Zangband, which is an expanded version of Angband, which in turn is based on Moria and Umoria.

I thought Zangband became impossibly hard later on... you have to kill the Serpent of Chaos rather than the Balrog. I found it impossible even without cheating, until I found you could edit the monster and items lists!

I think Zangband is the best game of its kind: an expanded version of Moria, but I think the best Rogue-style game around is Ancient Domains of Mystery. If only they made a graphical version of that...

Thanks very much to Juha Niemimäki for porting Moria to OS4. I spent many, many hours on my A1200 playing this game. I'm a hopeless gameplayer (Toaks can vouch for how bad I am at Quake II ) but Moria is one of those you can just enjoy playing without having lightning reactions and shrewd strategic skills.

One problem though is that the game really requires a 640 x 200 screenmode which I don't seem to be able to get working with my Radeon 7000 and 15" TFT monitor. The graphics are far too small on a 1024x768 screen. Is there any way to scale the graphics up?

Toaks + others:

Hi,

I just figured out that Moria contains some bugs, ie. CloseGadget is not responding :) Sorry, I forgot to code a handler...

Anyway, I will consult StephenR about the scaling, it should be possible, the GFX is lowres of course...

Currently I'm trying to port Omega and perhaps Nethack later...let's see what happens. Unfortunately ADOM sources are not available, I believe the original authors did the Amiga port by themselves. Anyway, I'll try Angband plus some variants too, the sources should be cleaner than Moria ;)

Aargh! That would mean starting Debian again - don't make me do it!

I don't think Q2 works on OS4 yet - or does it?

Is there a Q1 server?

Not really been a fan of D&D type games but I'll download it anyway. Who knows I might be swayed.

This is getting a bit off topic, but yes Quake 2 works nicely on Debian. I would prefer an OS4 version though, with some Radeon hw acceleration...

Has anybody managed to get a saved game to reload?

I have a (saved) entry in the ranking table, but it doesn't load when I restart the game - I have to create a new character every time.

@RedMelons:

Strange. Works here.

Do you have moria.sav in Moria: directory?

Can you load your save file with "moria filename.sav"?

What about SnoopDOS?

The more I have tested CWMMoria, the more confident I am about the fact the highscores are not working correctly. I don't know the reason, sorry.

Man, that would be very nice of you! I have exchanged a mail with Bablos who is responsible for Amiga *Angband ports and he said to me that he is unlikely to do OS4 ports.

Doh! Sorry, my fault! I was starting Moria from the Workbench icon. If you do that, when you quit (Ctrl-X) you get "Saving game ... can't create new file".

Starting Moria from Shell works fine.

I changed the Icon Setting from 'Start from Workbench' to 'Start from Shell' and it works fine.
