Does it work on GFX card? So that it could run on OS4.

I don't know, sorry, someone should try this.
It's tested from kick 1.2 to 3.1...

@elwood

No, the whole graphics engine would have to be rewritten, in which case it would have been better to just write a Stunt Car Racer clone from scratch instead of hacking the original.

Of course, it should work under E-UAE...

Although a re-working of the original is great, this would have got my vote

Where's a poll when you want one?

Ain't there a possibility inside UAE to do a wrapper for GFX functions? As an example, all WritePixels() would be redirected to P96_WritePixel() (or whatever the function are called).

Yes, but thats irrelevent since Stunt Car Racer uses the chipset directly.

Honest question and no flame intended, but is this actually legal or is this simply an illegal crack?

Time to beg for someone to create a Petunia extension or a new standalone emulation layer to emulate the old custom chipset, but somehow I get the feeling this one has been discussed many times before

For me it isn't illegal but if somebody of the moderators here means what CARE project is doing is contrary to any rules or regulations then I have no problem about the deletion of this thread.

Otherwise enjoy the game !
Thanks.

@Jules

While this is obviously a hobby project by someone who is passionate about the excellent games back catalogue of the Amiga, done as a labour of love and not for profit, it is technically illegal to distribute these hacks.

I just wrote about this on ANN.lu... here is what I said there:

Quote:

I don't wish to belittle your efforts in any way (in fact, I once disassembled Stunt Car Racer and started working towards writing a track designer. It never got finished), but I fear you may have to be more careful.

Its no good to say "For me, it isn't illegal", since Stunt Car Racer is a commercial game, the rights of which are still owned by existing software companies. In fact, Geoff Crammond and a company called Lost Toys are said to be working on a sequal for the PC, called "Stunt Car Racer Pro". In these circumstances they would be looking to protect their intellectual property, and projects like yours could be targetted.

Just recently, Atari (now owned by Infrogrammes), ordered AtariAge.com to remove all the hacks of Atari console games people had made. This is the exact same situation; people had taken ROM images of Atari 2600, 5200 & 7800 games, and modified the graphics and gameplay. Atari are actively working to stop these being distributed.

In this situation, it might be best to offer a patch file (maybe using XDelta or Spatch) against the disk image that WHDLoad creates for a legally HD installed game. That way you're only distributing your changes, not the game itself.

Maybe if WHDLoad is ported to OS40, I don?t think WHDLoad 68k version works, as I don?t think the MMU is emulated, this is most likely way fusion 68k and shape shifter, requires UAE, any way you can always use it under E-UAE / OS40

@NutsAboutAmiga

It doesn't really make sense to port WHDLoad to OS4. All WHDLoad does is allow games which are badly written work on upgraded classic Amigas. The games themselves still bang the hardware are merrily as before, just in a way which works on most classic Amigas.

E-UAE is the only real way to run this stuff on the AmigaOne.

xeron:

A scripted frontend for euae would be nice. For example a script that starts euae with all settings needed for a specific game. Perhaps a tooltype scheme can be set up for this. The ADF (or set of adf's for multi disk games) is shipped with an icon with euae as the application and all settings needed are in the icon tooltype list.

Click and run.

Instead of click, select, configure, run.

/Björn

The original versions of both games are available for free: Stunt Car Racer can be downloaded from BTTR, while Elite is available from Ian Bell's homepage (though David Braben is probably not exactly excited about that).

The hacks available from CARE are illegal though: David Braben is known to make sure nobody messes with his IP (e.g. he stopped the "Elite - the new kind" project a while ago) and according to AmiGer, the IP owners did not give him the permission to distribute a modified version of Stund Car Racer.
