Miscellaneous News   Miscellaneous News : Help recover lost source code! (Seagate ST3660A HD)
posted by Excalibur on 5-Mar-2005 5:08:00 (4964 reads)
Seagate ST3660A owners please take notice:

The following was recently posted by Jens Langer, follow the link below for further info:

Update: Jens writes: "!! THANKS - Data recovered with spare Seagate ST3660A Controller board - THANKS !!"

Hello guys,

Your help is required to salvage important, still lost source code like the source code of the TextEditor.mcc MUI class, the IProbe source code, the HTMLview.mcc MUI class sources or even the QuickLayers source code.

In fact, I did receive the still defective harddisk (Seagate ST3660A) from Allan Odgaard (the author of the above software titles) on which the source code for all these well-known Amiga software parts are located and after a short analysis it seems that "only" the controller board of that particular harddisk is defective and needs to be replaced.

However, the high diversity of different controller board/firmware revisions for that harddisk makes it very hard to just take the board of replacement harddisk of the same ST3660A type.

Therefore I am requesting, that you please have a look at the following small webpage I prepared on which I placed some images of the defective harddisk and controller board. Please have a look at the areas marked with a red rectangle and if you still own, or even can get hold of a ST3660A due to friends/collegues, please DO try to compare these values and report yours back to me, so that we might find out if your ST3660A controller board is compatible to the defective one of Allan.

http://www.jens-langner.de/seagate/

Please note, that if I can get hold of the data on the harddisk many well-known software applications like YAM, SimpleMail and so on would definitly appreciate that as i.e. TextEditor.mcc is still an integral part of these applications and needs to get updated/fixed urgently!!

And please do feel free to forward this link/address/mail to any web forum/newssite or whatsoever to allow to reach more people.

Thanks for you attention and it would be highly appreciated if I can get hold of the still important data on that harddisk!!!

cheers,
jens

Have anyone checked how much it would cost to let a data recovery company take care of this as they should have the right equipment? Too much I guess...

@AmiDog, those guys are often quite expencive. Last time I checket it was someting like EUR3000 just to take a look at it. But there's probably cheaper ones..

I'll browse through my HDD graveyard when I get up, that's if this fever will let me..

I used to have one in an old P60. I remember seeing Allan's original plea for help, and seeing that my drive was the right model. Unfortunately the PC was in active service at the time, so I couldn't part with the drive - and I have since got rid of it.

Actually, looking at that page, mine would probably have been too old, as it was circa 1995. I'm surprised they were still making these in 2000.

Chris

Doh! Do I get a prize for a near miss? My board is 22792 instead of 22799. I so wanted to be a hero.

I have a seagate, but the pics don't help me too much bucause the layout of the hd is quiete different.
The only code looks similar is SG22580 - 101REVA
Hope it helps.
P.S. Actually i have another one but it is in the computer so i must check it later.

Most likely one of the components on it's way to falling of the controller board, if you know some thing about electronics you can fix it your self, you need the proper equipment for the job thats all, takes about 2+ hours, I have don it my self a tow times.

Don't know if it helps but googling for "st3660a 22799" brings up

http://compucanjes.com/gen.php?id_pagina=17&session=&id_articulo=1933

which looks like Spanish or something similiar and babelfish translating it to:

http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/trurl_pagecontent?url=http%3A%2F%2Fcompucanjes.com%2Fgen.php%3Fid_pagina%3D17%26session%3D%26id_articulo%3D1933&lp=es_en

Yes. But the price is high. And there is great chance that someone has the right drive.

There's also this place that has a ST3660A 958002-404 in stock.

Georgs link also looked good, but none of the two sites shows all the numbers and it's hard to know which is the most important.

@Georg: Ey! I happen to know the owner of that store. Maybe is Argentina´s biggest second hand seller. He sells everything you can imagine.
In fact, i was in the phone with him yesterday, talking about all his very old stuff (you know, Ataris, Commodres, Amigas) and now this!

If i can be of any help...just let me know!!!

Cheers!

Sebastian
