Software News   Software News : WW2 3.0 with Network Play
   posted by ssolie on 3-Jul-2005 0:44:16 (2551 reads)
This is a free computer version clone of the "Axis & Allies" board game by Milton Bradley.

Now with a head-to-head network play option!

Get it from OS4Depot and go to war against a friend.

The biggest difference between this version and all the other attempts (both commercial and non-commercial) is that this implementation is exclusively for the Amiga! :)

The game is currently incomplete but still playable in its current form. Only R&D rules remain to be implemented as well as configuration options. See the included AmigaGuide file for more details.

Major changes in 3.0 include:
- Implemented basic head-to-head internet play.
- GUI now runs in either host or remote mode at startup.
- Windows can now be dragged offscreen.
- Greatly improved robustness in error situations.
- Added entropy seed to the random number generator.
- Fixed bugs reported by John Chandler.
- Fixed various obscure rule violations.
- Improved file requesters.

Congrats on getting it to this point

When I saw it at the Ottawa Amiga Show back in 2004, it was a work in progress when you demoed it.

Nice really, but I am yet waiting for Enemy Territory to play Axis vs. Allies...

Is there a 68K OS3.x version of this?

Thanks,
Amiboy

Why specifically does it require BB2?

How do I know if I have BB2 installed or not?

Thanks for reminding me.

The new ppc-amigaos version has been uploaded to Aminet now.

@68K lovers
Sorry but this is both an R&D project and a hobby. WW2 will continue to use the latest version of AmigaOS that is available.

Great to see another public release! I've been following the change log with interest

Time to crank up the downloading...

Excellent work Steve!

@ssolie

I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong or not, but can't seem to get a game to start up.

I've tried various combinations of things, but there is definitely nothing in the guide that gives clear instructions on how to start a game.

Anyway, starting the GUI gives me new screen after selecting it with a window and three buttons. If I pick anything other than quit, the window goes away and I never seem to get anything else. However, it still seems to be running because I can hit RightAmiga-Q and it drops back to the Workbench. It even does this if I've run the server executable beforehand.

Any ideas if I'm doing anything wrong? I used to play Axis & Allies on the PC a few years ago, and would like to give this a try.

@DWolfman

This works here:

Select host a game, on the next screen RMB brings up the meny, where to choose new game.

Thanks, I was not getting the menu before. Being how every other program I have gives some indication of the menu when clicking anywhere in the screen, I just didn't think of moving the pointer up to the menu bar to right click.

Now I need to read the manual to see how to play it.

I thought you would figure it out eventually if I just waited a bit.

The RMB is used for panning and (with shift key) zooming around the map. I never thought to release the RMBTRAP when the map isn't actually visible. I'll put it on the to do list.

The GUI is in obvious need of an overhaul so I'm going to be taking steps to improve both the look and feel with the next release. The gfx are getting tired as well so if anyone has any to donate just let me know.

I usually don't go for looks first because then you can slowly improve the looks and the users are thrilled each time you release even if the functionality isn't really any better.

Finally had a chance to install and play yesterday but it's asking for layers.library v51. I guess it's time for me to bite the bullet, update UBoot and install Update 3.
