Software News   Software News : SFS 1.245
posted by VooDoo on 13-Jul-2005 9:41:27 (5012 reads)
New SmartFileSystem is available for download! (68k and OS4 version)

- SFS now refuses to format too large partitions and existing too large
partitions are mounted read-only. The current partition size limits
of SFS are:
64 GB with 512 bytes/block
128 GB with 1024 bytes/block
256 GB with 2048 bytes/block
512 GB with 4096 bytes/block
1 TB with 8192 bytes/block
2 TB with 16384 and 32768 bytes/block
Don't keep using old SFS versions because you have too large
partitions and want to continue using them, you WILL get errors on
such partitions sooner or later.

O.K. not having used SFS (yet), I note that the OS4 download is only a filesystem patch of some 53kb, but the 68k archive is nearly 300Kb.

How do I apply the patch, or set up SFS?
Do I install to a partition first and then run the patch?
Can I use both FFS and SFS on my A1, or do I exclusively have to use one or the other?
Is there an SFS manual anywhere?

The reason I am asking is that I am getting ocassional lock outs when booting in to OS4. It loads the workbench up to the point when it would normally load Amidock.
Sometimes it just sits there, and sometimes it tells me work2: volume is invalidated, or has a checksum error (not sure which I am at work at the moment).

My solution is to boot from the OS4 update#1 cd and check Work2: in Partition_Wizard. Which then returns and tells me Work2: is OK, and I reboot fom my hard drive and everything is back to normal. I don't know why it happens, seems random, more often than not after a reboot following a grim reaper.

Anyway from what I've read, using SFS on my Work2: partition might eliminate this problem.

Thanks Jörg, great you've decided not to stop (for now) developing SFS

How do you install this?

The SmartFileSystem file resides in SYS:Kickstart/.
But gpatch'ing the file?!? Isn't that SAS/C tool for 68k?

How do I make the patch for OS4?
Downloading gpatch archive doesn't help, there's no OS4
version in the bin drawer.

@Samwel

Download GPatch from the provided link, copy to C:
Download SFS_1.241_to1.245.gpatch and copy to SYS:
Open a shell and type:
GPatch SYS:Kickstart/SmartFileSystem SFS_1.241_to_1.245.gpatch SmartFileSystem_1.245

Edit:
Thanks Jörg for continuing to develop SFS!

I made the update (keeping a backup of the old SFS1.241.kmod thing)

Now, I have my usable partitions (icones as usual), and clone ones, with "DH1:SFS\0" name instead of "Work", and "floppy with a stop hand on it" icon, instead of my HD icon.

I can still use programs in Work:, but how do I get rid off the clones icones on my WB ?

same problem here!
in addition to that, if you right click on the "normal" icons (having popup menu installed) workbench asks me to insert drive "sfs:" or smth similar...

i reverted to the older version.

byebye...

Ooops, I didn't think about that Worbench bug since it's finally fixed ... (in beta-tester versions, not yet in update3).

The way ContextMenus tries (and with current versions of SFS, CDFileSystem, etc. fails) to get the device name is broken and I don't support such hacks anymore.

I've uploded a new OS4 version of SFS with 2 old workarounds enabled again which fix the Workbench and ContextMenus problems.

@joerg

I've a sad news for you...

I made a new update from 1.241 to 1.246 and it's worse !!

I couldn't boot !!

I have the progress bar of the modules loading, then I go back to the UBoot test sequence (3com, USB, SCSI..)

I had to boot from the OS4CD to rename my SFS1.214 FS to be able to reboot normaly

My setup :
µA1, latest UBoot & Update #3
1 76GB HD with latest SLB (I have a linux root partition on the same HD)
my WB boot partition is in FFS, all other in SFS

Great to see, Jorg! And I happen to have just bought a new sii680 and SATA disk so hmm, as good a time as any

For anyone that doesn't already know, there is an SFS mailing list as well, which might be the best place, or at least another place ,for SFS specific help. You can join by sending an email with 'subscribe' in the subject to: sfs-request@freelists.org

@ pascal

On my A1 G4 XE (fixed but im using the sii0680)
i can boot and continue to use SFS1.216.
The 1.215 had this stop hands over the icons as you
said but with 1.216 its nice again. No handicons :)

Im just finished with making a backup of my DH3: 70gb
partition. Changed DH3: to 1024blocksize and formated.
Doesnt complain :) so now im copying back the backup
to dh3.

Thanks for the fast update :)

No idea why it didn't work for you, sounds like the 1.246 binary got corrupted somehow.
You can check it with "C:md5sum SmartFileSystem_1.246" (if md5sum isn't included in
the public versions of OS4 there should be other md5sum tools on Aminet):

It's possible that the author of ContextMenus doesn't know the proper way of doing that (it's not like it's that easy to get Amiga programming info these days...) Does anyone know who he is, so he can be informed and fix the bug? I guess the tool is still maintained, since it comes on the OS4 CD.

Ok, I must have missed a patch or download somewhere:
8.Workbench:Devs> version L:SmartFilesystem full
SmartFilesystem 1.233 (09/16/2004)
AmigaOS4 PPC

That doesn't look like v1.241 as referenced in the patch file. Is there somewhere to download the full OS4 version? Could that be why some people's are failing (was it replaced and accidentally downgraded with pre-release 3?)?

@Joerg

it's fine now, at last regardin the checksum

in fact, I made the patch in RAM:, the MD5sum was right, but when I copy the file on my Kickstart drawer, the file get corupted !
No I went thru a SFS partition first, and then to my sys: partition.

It's not the first time I have corrupted fil, copying then direct from Ram: to Sys: partition...
I have to solve this problem...

I've patched the 1.241 version to 1.246 (the last available), and I've replaced the old binary in SYS:Kickstart with the new one...it's enough? Do I have to do something else (play with MediaToolBox or reformat my partition) ?

@wegster

You should have version 1.241 with OS4 update 3, I have anyway.

But it should be simple to install. Just get it from the update 3 archive
and copy it to SYS:Kickstart/
