posted by freaks on 4-Aug-2005 10:26:17 (3849 reads)
"The bounty project of a GTK-MUI wrapper has been ported to AROS "
as stated on the aros-exec web site.

This is a great news for all Amiga API compatibles systems (mos/os4/amithlon/uae etc..)
the GTK-MUI wrapper will help a lot in porting apps from the linux world..
there a project page on sourceforge.net where you can check the screenshots. here's the status of the port.

keep up the good work o1i

I'm really happy to see it progressing! I also hope to see an OS4 native gtk -> Reaction wrapper.

I want FireFox!

There is not a single gdk function on the status page, and Firefox needs gdk for drawing operations. You cannot port it without.

Haven't done any GTK development, but isn't GDK the platform dependent layer that sits between GTK and whatever the native API is? i.e. isn't GDK the bit that should need to be re-written to port GTK?

Questions:

1. Is this all of GTK done?

2. How much extra work is GLIB and GDK?

I can answer your first question.
No, it isn't all finished. Development will continue in AROS now.

Here is the status page:

Really good news!
This solves some developing decision problems for my HammerForge project (If ever I'll have time for it).

@MetalJoe:

GDK is still platform-independent, it's the kernel of the system that sits between GTK and the native graphics system. GDK offers windows abstratction as well as text and graphics drawing functions, and is used by GTK widgets to render themselves.

If you'd port GTK, you would port GDK to the platform, and the GTK widgets use the GDK layer for rendering. However, GTK applications that implement their own widgets, or do other graphics operations (like Firefox) will require GDK.

glib is pretty trivial to port, a port was contained in the last SDK. The only problematic areas in glib are modules and threads support, but both can be relatively easily ported.

GDK is the real deal. It requires rather a lot of drawing operations from the underlying OS. This is where the main work in a GTK *port* would be, more so since GDK knows how to draw wide lines, join types, cap types etc.

Please remove the o1i-link in the news-item, it's confused with someone else (or point to the correct URL instead).
