Software News   Software News : WookieChat 1.8 now available, v1.6 onwards OS4 only
   posted by MikeB on 29-Aug-2005 12:14:18 (3293 reads)
"There is some documentation now to help explain WookieChat commands, and hopefully make the program easier to understand for people new to IRC. Maintaining the 68k version was getting too problematic for various reasons, so from version 1.6 onwards WookieChat is for AmigaOS4 only."

Changes 1.8
- No more "freed/unfreed signals" messages when quitting
- I undid a change from 1.7 that seemed to have no effect because I think it introduced a new bug, displaying old text you typed randomly sometimes.

Good to see you're still working on it though!

That's sad. Limiting this application to only 1 amiga platform.

Well... maybe, yes. But when you take into account that this is a spare time project I can understand the authors decision very good. Maintaining more versions of the program is maybe to complicated/ time intensive/ whatever.

So I guess we have to live with that.

@jahc

Nice program, I will try it out!

Realize that not everyone has the money to buy hardware to run all Amiga-alike OSes for development, not everyone may have room to put all these machines even if they had the money for them, and not everyone has the time, energy and/or attention span to properly support each and every Amiga-alike platform. Sometimes things just work out that one has to choose, and if you don't like what he chooses, that's unfortunate but unavoidable at times. You can't please all of the people all of the time and all that...

Besides, isn't this what OS4Emu was supposed to solve? Bill is right, your average bedroom coder can't be expected to support multiple flavours of the platform. It's hard enough to do on Java, and that was *designed* to be write-once-run-anywhere, with a central committee that decides what's standard and what's not. Amiga-like OSs try to be compatible, but there is also the fact that they're built differently (OS4 sits on top of a HAL, MOS is a mach-like API layer on top of a microkernel, and AROS tries to be as classic-like as possible, while also trying to be machine independent without the hassle of a HAL)

It would be nice if MOSEmu was released too...
