Internet News   Internet News : "ADT Find" functionality is BACK!
   posted by jahc on 16-Oct-2005 3:17:09 (2136 reads)
The search function on the main aminet ftp server is back!

Aminet can be used by FTP as you all know. With some Amiga FTP clients, there is a protocol called ADT (Aminet Directory Tool). This expands on the FTP standard and gives Aminet users the ability to see file descriptions, the last 7 days of uploads, and the directory name it is located in (etc util/arc, mus/edit), etc.

This is nothing new. But, when www.aminet.net was reborn with a new web interface and new uploads were being accepted again, the "Find" functionality of ADT was broken! But thanks to nicomen, this functionality is back! So you can search for files easily with your favourite Amiga ADT capable FTP client, such as AmFTP or AmiTradeCenter. I'm not keen on the web interface myself. There are probably people who prefer it, but the choice is back again.

Screenshot: My AmiTradeCenter setup, displaying a common search

Configure your FTP clients to use the ADT server "aminet.net" and the Aminet server "ftp.aminet.net". Thank you nicomen!

We're still experimenting a bit though. Had to reverse-engineer the format and write a new server that handles the requests.

It's still in beta form, and no guarantees are made. Please report to aminet@aminet.net in case of anomalities or just because it made your life.

Beware that you need to set the ADTFind server to be aminet.net in your client (many had wustl.edu or other hostnames by default).

If it turns out ok, we will try to tell ADT authors about proper details or just alter them on Aminet if the authors are unreachable or agree.

Anyway consider it beta and don't rely your nuclear power stations and missile defenses on it just yet.

It seems to work well in AmiTradeCenter, thanks for bringing it back! I'd forgotten how much I missed being able to easily look at the latest uploads and then just do a batch download to look at later If I notice any funnies I'll let you know.

Cheers,

Robert

@Spot:

Go to ATC's menu, select "Global Settings", open the "ADT" tab and change "ADTFind server" to aminet.net.

Afterwards change server entry for aminet.net to "mode: ADT" and hit the connect button.

If that doesn't work, try to come up with a more detailed bug report It definitely works with ATC, that was the first thing we used for testing.

If it doesn't work in ATC it's probably an OS4 bug on the server... ;-P
