Software News   Software News : JAmiga gives loud - new screenshot
posted by Anonymous on 30-Jan-2006 16:38:14 (3662 reads)
The JAmiga team has released a new screenshot to show the ongoing progress of
this JavaVM implementation for AmigaOS and clones.

Read more:

New screenshot

Usually, a single new screenshot wouldn't be worth mentioning. However, this
one comes with a lot of changes that can already be downloaded from the daily
source tarball. A number of the AWT Test suites are now working very well.
Therefore, we wanted to share this with you.

Your JAmiga Team

indeed.... that screenshot doesn't say all that much though :) are the buttons clickable, or is it just a 'dead' window? either way, it's nice to see that great progress has been made! how far from ready is it in functionality?

EDIT: Taking a look at the archives available now, it seems that A LOT has happened since i last looked at it, sweet!

Cool, nice progress, I hope to see a native OS4 version soon, java is becoming more and more important this days, think I try to download the OS3 version to check how well it works

yupp! it would be cool if it eventually evolved into a browser plugin. there's some nice java apps out there on the net, an online c64 emulator for example. =)

Good news, but has anyone managed to get it to compile on OS4? I had a quick go
but it failed to make the header files.

Anyone else had more luck?

Cheers,
Bean.

Can we have a description of what the window in question is doing? It just looks like a bunch of squares, and I don't know what that means. Drawing of squares works, or is some scaling with window size being done, or are they buttons, or what? I'd just like to have some understanding of what I'm looking at in the screenshot.

bean: you have to make headers ? , sounds like a dodgy makefile.

Toaks,

I only had a quick look whilst the kettle was boiling, but in the readme they
say the OS4 compile couldn't be tested as they don't have OS4.

We can do better than that, any developer here with any time to spare to sort
out the make files / build? It shouldn't take too long, but I can't dedicate
any time to it atm. (TN stuff).

Cheers,
Bean.

There make file in the include directory gives fdtoprgam unix style args in the os4 section and calls it ppc-amigaos-fdtopragma and thus it doesn't get far.
Easy tweak to give it amiga args like
Quote:

os4:
fd2pragma infile fd/jamiga_lib.sfd clib clib/jamiga_protos.h special 140
idltool --proto --inline --interface jamiga.xml
fd2pragma infile fd/nativelib.fd clib clib/nativelib_protos.h special 140
idltool --proto --inline --interface nativelib.xml

the next "mistake" is that idltool by default puts all generated files in
in "include/proto/" etc not simply "proto/" etc so the includes end up in the wrong
place. Easy to fix by hand.

After that I tried running make in src and got a good few warning
things like exit() and strcmp() were undeclared indicating missing header files
and then I got some mistyping of libraies eg

java_lang_reflect_Const.c:39: error: conflicting types for 'SysBase'
SDK:include/include_h/proto/exec.h:22: error: previous declaration of 'SysBase' was here
java_lang_reflect_Const.c:39: error: conflicting types for 'SysBase'
SDK:include/include_h/proto/exec.h:22: error: previous declaration of 'SysBase' was here

then I've run aout of ttime....

Hmm, some years ago Jamiga looked like this...

Haven't been able to keep up with the project, I know it was remae into librayr style instead, but good thing it's still alive! Where are you Peter?

Good to see progress has restarted!
I've tested it a couple of months ago (OS3.9)... i managed to compile (not using Jamiga of course, it's a virtual machine) and run some test code quite easily and i was impressed by the fact that i was able to do it even if it was at version 0.0.0.something. Good work!

@bean

The OS4 version of the Makefile is for a cross-compiler. I fidlled with it a bit in the past to try to get working on OS4, will give it another shot as now there's a new drop available..
