Software News   Software News : SimCoupe (Sam Coupe) emulator for AmigaOS 4.
posted by drHirudo on 20-Mar-2006 8:03:00 (3210 reads)
SimCoupe emulates a SAM Coupé - an 8-bit Z80-based home computer released in 1989 by Miles Gordon Technology. Although superior in it capabilities compared to the other 8 bit machines in the market at the time, it didn't succeed in the space, where the 16-bit machines (Amiga, Atari, Macintosh and PC) were already established as a standart. Nevertheless some great software titles were released for the machine, taking advantage of it's unique sound and graphic capabilities. Now thanks to SimCoupe you can enjoy Sam Coupe software right on your Amiga.

Click here for a screenshot and here to download the AmigaOS 4 version. This link points to downloads of some Public Domain titles, ready to be run in the emulator. Thanks to Dr Andy Wright's permission to distribute the SAM ROMs with the emulator, there is no need for copy from real Sam Coupe and transfer them or other complicated install procedure. It runs straight out of the RAM: for example.

Some key features:
* Advanced Z80 CPU emulator offering full instruction set coverage, including all undocumented instructions.

* Memory configuration for 256K or 512K main memory, and up to 4MB external memory (1MB blocks).

* Full support of all four Sam Coupe display modes, with updates accurate to a single 8x1 pixel cell. This allows for any kind of video effect (mode mixing, on/off-screen border and palette effects, etc.) to be displayed correctly.

* Complete Philips SAA 1099 sound chip emulation thanks to the SAASound Library. Stereo sound output with full mixing. Spectrum beeper emulation.

* Accurate floppy disk drives emulation. Atom Hard disk drive emulation.

* Sam Mouse emulation mapping to the Amiga mouse. SAMBUS and DALLAS clock hardware emulation. SAM time relative to real time.

* Built-in advanced debugger giving powerful control over the emulated system, with minimal effect on running speed.

Enjoy. And don't forget to report bugs.

Nice one, never actually used a Sam Coupe, but looks like I could soon :)

[misty screen effect]

This looks really good, as an ex-Spectrum 16k (upgraded to 48k) and then a +3 I really wanted a Sam Coupe (the +3 was unreliable and never really got pushed technically).

As it happened the +3 eventually spent so much time at the (Dixons!) repair centre that they gave me my money back... A further twist was my dad offering me £100 if I got an Amiga as he thought I should get one for some reason... I didnt want it as it was a Commodore machine!

Oh how wrong I almost was! (Although getting a Sam Coupe I think would have been quite cool, just not as cool as the Amiga was in the late 90s!)

Ah, the old Coupé. Must set mine up again.

You can read non-copy-protected SAM disks on a PC so there's no reason at all why an A1200 can't do it... it's just no-one's written the software to. However, if a PC can then it's probably just standard MFM encoding anyway so would probably require very little work.

BTW, Prince of Persia on the SAM is dead good. :)

Great news, I've been having a hard time geting a real sam coupe for my collection as they are selling for stupid prices at the moment. I've used SimCoupe on my pc now I can do so on my AmigaOne.

This is all I remember from the SAM:

It's the Amiga juggler demo! (but on the SAM)

@arnie

I've been following them on Ebay recently hadn't seen any at all until about a month ago. The first one went for £285 and a few people auctioned their since but good examples have gone for as low as £70. I have a feeling that it'll be some time before we see any again though.

@Rob

Yes I've seen the same auctions and lost on one right at the last moment which is usualy the way. I also got sniped on a Memotech in the last 5 seconds, don't think we shall see either again for a while now.

OS4 SimCoupe is excellent, I think the config menu is better than the PC version the only snag I found was I was unable to load files from a disk other than the partition the emulator is on because there is no way to change devices.

Nice emulator. I've never used the Sam Coupe before, but I always like looking
at the machines of yesteryear through emulation.

Nice job.

Nice one

I was interested in the Sam in my younger years but getting my parents to fork out for a new machine when there was nothing wrong with my Speccy proved too much.

I'll have a good look at this one.

Thanks, FuZion.

Yes, I know about this problem, hopefully will write a solution (device scanner) in the next versions. You still can insert disks from other devices by pressing F10, go to disk menu and type the path/file directly in the field for example CD0:sam-coupe/games/games1.zip

Next time you press the F1, you will be in the CD0:sam-coupe/games drawer. And can select files from CD0: Not very good solution, but solution nevertheless.

Great! Too bad I don't have OS4. Any chance for a WarpOS version?

I own a Sam Coupe! (and it's cool)
I haven't got a disk drive though
