Software News   Software News : RISC OS 3 on AmigaOS4!
   posted by Chris_Y on 3-Apr-2006 21:58:38 (3116 reads)
A port of ArcEm - the Acorn Archimedes emulator is now available from OS4Depot.

The Archimedes was a British computer from Acorn, and the successor of the BBC Micro. It ran a quirky operating system called RISC OS, which has some excellent features and has a style guide that is generally adhered to. It is the most drag'n'drop OS to be found, and well worth investigation by budding GUI or OS designers.

Sadly the Acorn situation has a lot of parallels with the Amiga, with the parent company being split up, and hardware and OS eventually ending up in the hands of two different companies.

You can find out more about RISC OS from RISC OS Ltd themselves.

Or you can download the emulator and try it out for yourself.

The ArcEm project homepage is here.

Please note that the required ROM image is not included - the only legal way to obtain this file is to extract it from a real Acorn.

RISC OS 3.10 discs are available legally direct from Acorn FTP - releases.

I should point out that if you are too lazy to extract or unable to get the ROM images to your AmigaOne, you can get them from here:
http://madjock.emulationworld.com/
You will need to join the files together with the join command.

From a legal point of view you should not download the above unless you own the physical ROMs.

RISC OS also has firefox... and it works...

Anyone tried running the emulator, and Firefox through it? hehe... one way of getting a modern browser running....

AFAIK, FireFox is for RISCOS 4, and the emulator is for some version of 3...

BTW, the RISC OS page looks not far off from AInc's, they list the last update as 2003
http://www.riscos.com/risc_os_4/index.htm . (Although the rest of their site is pretty up to date...RISCOS that is..)

I was looking over the website, it looks like quite an interesting OS. One thing caught my attention:

Quote:
From now on RISC OS will be updated on a rolling basis, instead of releasing a major upgrade every couple of years. The important point to note is that there is no target for a "Final" release version of RISC OS, since technology and user requirements will very much dictate what features are, or are not, added to new versions of RISC OS and hence the RISC OS Select Scheme is deliberately intended to be fluid in nature.

That seems to be a very useful way of keeping your OS up to date, especially now that internet access is widespread and broadband usage is increasing noticeably from year to year. It's cheaper for the company selling the OS (also there's no risk of pressing too many or too few CDs), and the music industry has shown that downloads are the way of the future. I wonder if Hyperion might consider using this distribution model, since it sounds like a good compromise between "when it's done" and "I want it now dammit!"

Yes, the emulator doesn't emulate RiscPC hardware, so versions after 3.11 won't work. I take it 3.5 et al were never released as upgrades for the older models.

Firefox doesn't work, I tried it. It tries to allocate 17000K of memory, and ArcEm only supports up to 16384K. Even tweaking the amount of memory used by tasks in the task display window can't magic up memory that doesn't exist.

So it wouldn't run even under ARM Linux :(

I'm told it does run ARM Linux, but I haven't tried it.

I don't think Firefox + any modern window manager would run with such a limited amount of memory.

Interesting. I've checked the Iyonix site before...their Iyonix PC to run RISC OS has support for hardware 'podules,' proprietary bus interface, even on a more modern mobo. Also uses an nvidea gfx card (but PCI), supports up to 1GB of RAM (which presumably works, unlike the several 'won't work in tandem' sticks of 512MB RAM I've got here), has GigEthernet, and claims to read/write Word docs (can't tell what version). Looking through the Iyonix website, I can't help but think that's what EyeTech's site _should_ have looked like. (It's not great/perfect, but actually has real info there...)

Perhaps a predictable question from me, but does this mean that Arc Elite (supposedly the most advanced version of the game) and Lander (with the full depth cueing routines that Virus didn't have) will work?

@Angus

Yes. You can download both here.

@Varthall

I don't think Firefox would be much use anyway without an (emulated) network card.

I agree that it would be nice to run it in RISC OS or ARM Linux under emulation, would certainly beat dual-booting.

What we really need is an OS4 native Mac emulator which uses the AmigaOne's PPC, at least until a Firefox port gets here.

Chris
