Announcement   Announcement : APC&TCP takes distribution of CygnusEd
   posted by AndreasM on 10-Apr-2006 10:01:34 (2408 reads)
APC&TCP is proud to announce that it has taken the distribution of the well known text editor CygnusEd.

CygnusEd will be able to run on the classic Amiga and AmigaOS 4. A version supporting MorphOS is planned. In only a few weeks the program will be available. The support homepage for CygnusED will be online in a few days aswell.

About CygnusEd Professional Release 5

The maybe most famous text editor for developers was developed by Bruce Dawson, Colin Fox & Steve LaRocque (CygnusSoft Software) 20 years ago and was originally published by themselves. Already at that time CygnusEd has been known for its speed and solidness. CygnusEd has been developed even further in the following years and was one of the first programs with an ARexx interface and the first Amiga text editor with Undo/Redo functions. Many Amiga developers grew up with CygnusEd and a lot of software for the Amiga was developed using CygnusEd.
The last version 4 of CygnusEd was published in 1997 and was a fully reworked version adapted to AmigaOS 3.1.

The new version 5 of CygnusEd has been enriched with new functions and it is even faster and more solid. The helping tool "Ed" has been rewritten completely from scratch and is supplied with CygnusEd including the complete sources. Many old restrictions and flaws of CygnusEd have been eliminated. Version 5 is also the first version ported completely with all helping tools to the PowerPC processors and one of the first completely adapted commercial products for AmigaOS 4.

I look forward to the release of a new version of the best Amiga text editor and will purchase a copy as soon as my local dealer gets it in stock.

CygnusEd is a fantastic text editor for programming in - you can have multiple views of the same file (something which GoldEd sorely lacks IMHO).

Wonderful! I use 4.2 daily on OS4 but a few parts are broken.
I've been awaiting a native version for ages.

I've been using the OS4 native CygnusEd beta for some time now. Very fast and a solid performer. I've never lost a line of code due to a problem with CygnusEd. It did take some time to get used to the rather weird keyboard shortcuts (which I think I'll redefine at some point) but every editor has its quirks.

I look forward to buying a copy and helping Olaf out.

A plug-in that lets you see two parts of a file at the same time (as in this screenshot) is available here for Cubic IDE/GoldED8 users. It's not splitted views - for example, only one view is editable - but maybe it's good enough for some users.

I've noticed that when there is not a "Quote" button at the bottom when you are replying you will lose your signature.

I wonder why sometimes the "Quote" button is missing.

@ssolie

Yeah me to! I probably can cope with Notepad but I will buy this for support.

I bought 4.x for my classic aswell. But that version was used for my AmigaE
coding

@dietmar
Sounds promising - I think read-only views would be fine, but 2 views is too limiting for my needs. Then again, if you can do 2 views, extending it for more should be relatively easy...

As I already have MicroGoldEd customised to look & feel like CygnusEd, if/when it gets a multi-view ability it will make a fine alternative to CygnusEd.

Too limiting for your needs - are you kidding me? Anyway, you can have as many views as you like (screen shot). No luck with microgolded, free software, it's going to remain a basic editor.
