Software News   Software News : TuneNet gets ACC m4a plugin!
   posted by Curty on 25-Aug-2006 6:52:42 (3711 reads)
I have recently uploaded to OS4depot.net a plugin for Tunenet that gives it the capability to play AAC m4a files, so all you users with iPods will now be able to play your songs on your A1.

The plugin makes use of faad.library ( Download Here ) which needs to be copied to LIBS: for the plugin to function.

Thanks to Glenn Hisdal (For his port of Faad.Library) and to Paul Heams for the execellent TuneNet and for all his help and patience.

Get TuneNet AAC Plugin Here

Now go and enjoy ACC m4a music on OS4 with TuneNet!

I don't have an iPod (yet) but it is always great to see guys making use of the OS4 SDK to solve their problems. Kudos!

Now that's good timing! Tunenet will be used as an external player for my next update of "apod" my ipod management software. So an aac player is particularly useful for that.

It's great to have another high quality sound codec on OS4 - especially for Tunenet. Mplayer was already able to play them, but Tunenet is better suited by nature for playlists and so on :)

Nice one Curty.

TuneNet is going to become one of those 'must have' apps for AmigaOS.

Can this play copy-protected files from iTunes store? That's what most of my ipod stuff is at the moment, and I was under the impression that only ipods/itunes can play that stuff.

And if it can play the itunes-purchased, copy-protected songs, can TuneNet be used to convert them to the more user-friendly .mp3 format?

Since I don't have OS4, is there any chance getting this program for 68k?

@billt

I've not had chance to try this out yet. I THINK the problem is actually getting the files off your computer (The ones from the iTunes store) since with this plugin, actually playing them shouldn't be a problem.

I don't know about the copy-protected songs for this plugin but I do know about
saving the data to MP3's.

In a roundabout way you can save to disk. You see there is an MP3 Encode
plugin for it which can be used to record what you play (or what you are
listening to) to disk, but its main use is for broadcasting your songs as an
MP3 shoutcast stream.

I've toyed with the idea of a "Rip to Disk" option to ensure higher quality rips,
so you never know. In short it can rip music, but probably not at a high enough
quality just yet.

Not until I've added the features I'm currently writing. At the end of the
year I'm going to make a decision as to which additional way TuneNet goes. That
means in addition to the OS4 version, and not down a totally different path
entirely!

Cheers,
Bean.

@thread

Interesting that the file on the following page plays audio/video in MPlayer
and audio in Tunenet.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75424
sample_iPod.m4v4
(pre-encoded for iPod)
H.264
2.1 MB

Good sample to keep, since all the samples on this page are rock solid files.

You'll prob find that if you load an m4a into Mplayer that it will play it.
Music/sound is encoded the same wether its an m4a or m4v.(Its all AAC).

I wouldn't have thought it would work with Apple's FairPlay copy-protection, but the solution would be to burn them to audio CD and re-import from there. That loses all the protection. I'd advise doing it anyway as DRM is bad news.

I've just tried the latest version and it works great with AAC format podcasts, thanks!

Now users of AmiPodder (my Amiga podcast receiver) who use TuneNet as their player will be able to take advantage of those few podcasts that only supply an AAC feed.

Cheers,

Robert

@FuZion,

Actually not hard at all, all of these files are in the itunes directory in your My Music Directory on your computer, I've copied files from a PC to the Amiga and used apod to stuff them onto my iPod and yes they are copy protected ones, and yes this plugin plays them (and combined with iPodDisk plays them direct from the ipod).

Regards

Mark
