News   News : Total Amiga Archive CD Launches at Big Bash 4
   posted by rhino on 5-Sep-2006 19:37:09 (2413 reads)
At Total Amiga magazine we're often asked for copies of out-of-print back issues by readers looking for a particular article or wanting to complete their Total Amiga collection. In response to these requests we have produced the Total Amiga Archive CD, a collection featuring Total Amiga issues 1-20. This disc will be available to purchase for just £5 (including UK P&P) starting from the Big Bash 4 show in Peterborough on the 16th of September.

Each issue on the disc is included as two high-quality PDFs, one formatted for on-screen viewing and the other for printing. The PDFs are of much higher quality than we are able to offer for download from our web site.

The CD also includes several indexes helping you to find the information you want within the 200+ articles included and comes attractively packaged in a DVD-style case.

For further details and to pre-order you copy on-line visit the Archive CD page on the Total Amiga web site.

This sounds like a nice idea. Particularly for those of us who only subscribed recently.

Cool, this is a neat Idea especially the printable versions as staring at a cmputer screen for too long give me headaches.

@Mikey_C:
Oh well, we could do that already with the PDF downloads. But now we can laugh in glorious color and hi-res!

@all TA'ers:
Great idea, I've already preordered mine. Wish I could have been in a position to pick it up at BB4 myself.

I also ordered the only issue I would then be missing, no.21. (Rhino, if you read this, feel free to delay the back issue to go in the same package as the CD, if practical.)

Best regards,

Niels

Sounds like a cracking idea!

I'll purchase this at BB4 along with my subscription renewal.

Cheers,
Bean.

@Sicky

Alinea offer a Duplication service at good prices...

Could save you a lot of time and effort and help support some amiga programmers

Thanks for the suggestion.

At the moment we really have no idea how popular this will be (though initial signs are good, thanks folks) so we'll do them in-house initially and see how it goes.

Cheers,

Robert

I'm keen to buy one of these CDs, but not at the expense of joining PayPal.

Can I buy by DD or Visa?

You can purchase a copy without joining PayPal using the normal PayPal checkout process. Of course the payment still goes through PayPal but no account is created. There should be a link called "PayPal Account Optional" at the bottom of the Billing Information form that explains this.

Unfortunately accepting credit/debit card payments directly is prohibitively expensive for the value of the transactions we handle. We have no choice but to use a service like PayPal, which I have to say has been very reliable in the years we have been using it.

If you don't want to use PayPal at all then unfortunately the only option I know of for people outside the UK is to send payment in the post.

Thanks for your interest and I hope we can work something out,

Robert

@Rhino

Hi Rob, we got this mail on the Total Amiga mailing list today and thought that many people would like to know answers so thought to put it up here:

Great, I'd like a copy of the packaged disc if you can tell me
if the PDFs . . .

1. Loads into Pagestream (I have versions 2, 3 + 4) as a PDF using
    the PageStream PDF filter, and/or as a PageStream file.
    (PDFs of Clubbed 1 and 2 do not, maybe others don't as well)

2. Loads as individual pages, as I hate having to re-arrange pages
or print single sided paper. I want it to look like a magazine,
printed on both sides, which your current on-line PDFs do not.
(That seems to have been answered on the web-page as YES)

3. Is viewable/printable in all their glory with APDF2.2 via
PAR: (PostScript) as I want to print them to my colour laser
Why exclude the Amiga

Duno why but couldn't paste the whole question on here (is there a limit) so here's the rest!

I don't know, I should have the PDF import module as I have purchased PageStream 5 Pro but I've never tried it out. When I get the chance I will test this and post my results on the Archive CD page.

2. Loads as individual pages, as I hate having to re-arrange pages
or print single sided paper. I want it to look like a magazine,
printed on both sides, which your current on-line PDFs do not.
(That seems to have been answered on the web-page as YES)

Two PDFs of each issue are included on the CD:

Screen format: similar to the PDFs currently on the web site (in page order, page spreads merged together) but better quality.

Print format: pages arranged for double sided printing, you could use this to print an almost exact duplicate of the original magazine. BTW, the print PDFs are even better quality still.

PAR: (PostScript) as I want to print them to my colour laser
Why exclude the Amiga.

As stated on the web site, the PDFs are NOT compatible with APDF 2.2 (the version for 68K Amigas). This is because I do not have access to a PDF generator that produces compatible output. If anyone knows of a free or inexpensive utility (i.e. not Acrobat) that will produce APDF 2.2 compatible PDFs from Postscript files then I would be very interested.

BTW, the PDFs do work perfectly in APDF on MorphOS, AmiPDF on OS4, Preview on OS X and Acrobat Reader on Mac and Windows. It's a great pity that the current MorphOS version of APDF has not been back-ported to OS 3.x.

Cheers,

Robert
